Taken from the summary paper published in Lancet Infectious Diseases, 2013

We identified 6165 infectious disease studies with a total investment of 拢2路6 billion. Studies with a clear global health component represented 35路6% of all funding (拢927 million).

By disease, HIV received 拢461 million (17路7%), malaria 拢346 million (13路3%), tuberculosis 拢149 million (5路7%), influenza 拢80 million (3路1%), and hepatitis C 拢60 million (2路3%). We compared funding with disease burden (DALYs and mortality) to show low levels of investment relative to burden for gastrointestinal infections (拢254 million, 9路7%), some neglected tropical diseases (拢184 million, 7路1%), and antimicrobial resistance (拢96 million, 3路7%). Virology was the highest funded category (拢1 billion, 38路4%). Leading funding sources were the Wellcome Trust (拢688 million, 26路4%) and the Medical Research Council (拢673 million, 25路8%).
