Every year Peter Dawes from the <strong><a style=\"color: #ffcc00\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wesmed.org.uk\/\"><span style=\"color: #ffcc00\">Wessex Medical\u00a0 Research<\/span><\/a><\/strong> trust invites researchers from the University of Southampton to contribute to the &#8216;discovery\u00a0tent&#8217; and raise awareness of Research that is funded (past and present) by the trust.<\/p>\n<p>Around 100 researchers from the University sign up\u00a0to volunteer\u00a0and this year over 15 biological sciences staff and students took part in the three day event manning either the Biological Sciences, neuroscience or the biomedical imaging unit displays.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/reech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2017\/07\/IMG_0031.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"BioBlitz team\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">BioBlitz team<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On \u00a0Tuesday 25th July, Judith Lock and her\u00a0<strong><a style=\"color: #ffcc00\" href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/sustainabilityaction\/experience\/bioblitz.page\"><span style=\"color: #ffcc00\">BioBlitz<\/span><\/a><\/strong> team (Judith, Chester and Mairin) were encouraging children to take part in the big butterfly count <strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bigbutterflycount.org\">http:\/\/www.bigbutterflycount.org<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">\/<\/span><\/strong>about by making a brightly coloured butterfly observatory for their garden.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8221;It was a really great day. Lots of people of all ages who were interested in the broad spectrum that is biological sciences&#8221; <em>Judith Lock<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Amrit Mudher was active on the neuroscience stand and showcased her work on Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease using fruit flies as models.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/reech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2017\/07\/IMG_0034.jpg?resize=300%2C300\" alt=\"Mariana Vargas-Caballero and her brain activities\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mariana Vargas-Caballero and her brain activities<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Wednesday 26th July Mariana Vargas Caballero and team (Jacqui Nimmo and Ksenia Kurbatskaya) engaged young and old with hands-on activities on her research into synapses in the brain.<\/p>\n<p>This is what the visitors said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8216;That many hundred brain cells?&#8221; <em>4 year old<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Procedural memory takes a lot of practice&#8221; <em>35 year old<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nice to take something away&#8221; <em>20 year old<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Love the neuron models&#8221;
