The symposium gives students the chance to present their research to their peers and colleagues to inform all of their work and the range of subjects that are researched here at Southampton.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_703\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-703\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-703\" src=\"http:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/reech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2017\/07\/AC-300x167.jpg\" alt=\"Alison Caldwell presenting her work on immune evasion strategies in Tasmanian Devilsstrategies in Tasmanian Devils\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/reech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2017\/07\/AC-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/reech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2017\/07\/AC.jpg 746w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-703\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alison Caldwell presenting her work on immune evasion strategies in Tasmanian Devils strategies in Tasmanian Devils<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Talks ranged from ecological research with Emma Joslin presenting on the beneficial effects of having aromatic herb plants, such as lavender and thyme, in apple orchards to improve fruit yields, \u00a0to cancer research into the contagious cancers that are effecting the Tasmanian devil and how these animals use different strategies to invade the immune system when transferred between hosts.<\/p>\n<p>Posters covered developmental biology with Laura Caetano\u2019s poster on how changes in uterine fluid composition can affect endocytosis of nutrients in embryos to how biofilms around bacteria can contribute to contamination of urinary catheters, presented by Malissa Rahimi.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-702\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-702\" src=\"http:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/reech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2017\/07\/image1-e1499261892362-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Grace Hallinan (left) winner of the Oral Presentation award at this year\u2019s Biological Sciences Postgraduate Symposium.\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grace Hallinan (left) winner of the Oral Presentation award at this year\u2019s Biological Sciences Postgraduate Symposium.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the end of the day, prizes were awarded to the top three posters and oral presentations. This year, Miss Grace Hallinan was awarded first prize for her oral presentation on the use of microfluidic chambers to assess the spread of the pathological protein, tau, from diseased donor neurons to healthy acceptor neurons.
