A critical transition occurs halfway up the column.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the exhibitions is an artwork generated by Southampton sculptor Chris Cudlip in collaboration with BioSci researcher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/biosci\/about\/staff\/cpd.page\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00\">Prof Doncaster<\/span><\/strong> <\/a>and colleagues in geography. This artwork, which contains diatoms in clay\u00a0(a type\u00a0of algea!),<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-582\" src=\"http:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/reech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2017\/03\/mydia1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"mydia1\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/reech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2017\/03\/mydia1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/reech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2017\/03\/mydia1-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>\u00a0interprets research conducted by a team of academics in the UK &amp; China on how increased pollution in Chinese lakes leads to changes in biodiversity which acted as a signal of an impending ecosystem collapse (Doncaster et al 2016- click <strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00\"><a style=\"color: #ffcc00\" href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/ecy.1558\/full\">here<\/a><\/span><\/strong> for a link to their publication)<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0sculpture beautifully shows how changes in biodiversity threatens collapse of an ecosystem&#8211; \u00a0\u00a0click <strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00\">here<\/span>\u00a0 <\/strong>for more information on the artwork and to find out more about the science behind it click <strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00\">here.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The sculpture will feature in Southampton Science &amp; Engineering Day, a riverside festival in Southampton later in the year, Winchester Science Festival, and Brighton Science Festival after the summer.
