At Southampton, Biology addressing these issues is through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/biosci\/about\/equality\/index.page?\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">Equality and Diversity committee (E &amp; D)<\/span> <\/strong><\/a>identifying specific policies and actions within the department that can help change these numbers.<\/p>\n<p>This very successful E &amp; D event helped to address this \u2018leaky pipeline\u2019 and included\u00a0a moderated discussion with our postgrads over how to make the leap from PhD to postdoc level, with a particular emphasis on the challenges women face (given the leaky pipeline). This event took place between Tuesday Oct 11th , as this is <a href=\"http:\/\/findingada.com\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">Ada Lovelace day<\/span> <\/strong><\/a>in which events take place worldwide to celebrate the role of women in science.<\/p>\n<p>The event was attended by approximately 30 postgrads (female AND male!; see photos) \u2013 and\u00a0consisted of getting the postgrads to anonymously write down their\u00a0key challenges\/questions. \u00a0A committee of academics, including \u00a0Head of Biological Sciences, \u00a0Prof Keith Jones, and Dr Judith Lock, Dr Mark Coldwell and Dr Felix Eigenbrod went through these suggestions and came up with common themes.
