On Friday 14th October 2016,\u00a0Jessica Teeling <\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and her PhD student Paul Ibbett<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, \u00a0hosted a ‘neuroscience-focussed’ \u00a0lab visit\u00a0for six students and their teacher, Chris Pickard,\u00a0from the science department of\u00a0 Peter Symonds\u00a06th form\u00a0College<\/a><\/span><\/strong>. \u00a0This \u00a0annual event is part of\u00a0a Wellcome Trust funded Exsite programme<\/span><\/strong>, where students get an opportunity to perform\u00a0 a real experiment and\u00a0interpret the results with a scientist \u00a0at the University of Southampton (see for more details here<\/a> <\/span><\/strong>and here<\/a><\/span><\/strong>). Earlier in the week, the students were given a ‘mini lecture’ on the structure and function of the retina and the role of different cell types that make up this part of the central nervous system. \"adog53791\"Over the next two days, they worked in small groups, and stained\u00a0retinal tissue for blood vessels and immune cells using fluorescence antibodies. During the visit to CNS inflammation group<\/span><\/strong>, they analysed their tissue\u00a0using a fluorescent microscope to reveal the complex network of cells that make up the retina. In addition,\u00a0 they has\u00a0an opportunity to dissect an eye and isolate the lens and the retina, thanks to Neil Smyth<\/span> <\/strong>and Ellie<\/span><\/strong> who helped out dissecting the delicate neural tissue. Finally, in a workshop from Delphine Boche<\/span><\/strong> the students were able to see brain tissue from Alzheimer’s disease.<\/p>\n

All in all, a very\u00a0stimulating \u00a0morning, with lots of energy\u00a0 from\u00a0our 6th form students and their teacher Chris, and team work from\u00a0 academics and students in Biological Sciences in FNES\u00a0and Clinical Neurosciences from FoM.<\/p>\n

Are our 6th form student the next generation neuroscientist? We certainly hope so!<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
