\u00a0The project has been a realistic insight into the research profession and overall has been extremely interesting<\/em><\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Helena Rawsthorne, \u00a0a Biomedical Sciences student,\u00a0 just starting her third\u00a0year, \u00a0was one of our undergraduate students who successfully applied for prestigious Wellcome trust summer studentship to work\u00a0\u00a0in a research laboratory. During this 8 week placement, Helena\u00a0studied the role of microglia in an experimental model of Alzheimer\u2019s disease and investigated if the function of these innate immune cells of the brain\u00a0is altered following a bacterial systemic infection.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019I applied for the vacation scholarship because I wanted see first-hand what it\u2019s like to be a genuine research scientist\u2019\u2019, says Helena. \u2018\u2019It was exciting to be part of the team and carry out research. I was not simply an extra set of hands in the lab, the team trained me to do my own research for this project. I was taught how to cut tissue on a cryostat, carrying out immunohistochemistry, take pictures of my results on a fluorescent and confocal microscope, quantify my data and present it professionally as a figure. The project has been a realistic insight into <\/span><\/span>the research profession and therefore overall has been extremely interesting\u2019\u2019.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Jessica Teeling<\/a><\/span><\/strong> and co supervisor Alex Collcutt<\/a> <\/span><\/strong>were impressed with her work. \u2018\u2019Helena is a fantastic team player, she quickly picked up complex laboratory skills and developed her own research project, starting with a tissue block, all the way to presenting her results at our annual SoNG research conference: a real achievement\u2019\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Helena also took part in presenting our research to the general public at the New Forest show<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, a popular summer event. The \u2018snot lab\u2019 was very popular<\/a><\/span><\/strong> this year.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
