Dean prize day- congratulations to the winners!<\/p>\n

The\u00a02017 Dean\u2019s Prize Award Ceremony took place on Thursday 7th December. Prof Rachel Mills, recognised a number of colleagues for their exceptional contributions in research, education, enterprise, public engagement and citizenship.<\/p>\n

EDUCATION<\/u><\/p>\n

FERNANDO CALAHORRO-NUNEZ (BioSci)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Achievement; He was instrumental in the design and delivery of a new Masters module in neuroscience on optogenetics. This was over and above his day to day commitment to research and required significant additional time and effort. It enriched the student\u2019s curriculum and was very well received.<\/p>\n

HACHEM KASSEM (OES)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Achievement; He is superb in his role as a teaching fellow; His tireless commitment to enhancing undergraduate education and the positive influence he has on both undergraduate and postgraduates is commendable. He goes out of his way to help students outside of normal teaching commitments by providing broader career advice, mentoring and support. He makes considerable effort to keep in contact with alumni which has been of great benefit when engaging with industrial partners and getting their input into course development.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

MARIA CONCISTRE (Chem)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Achievement; Maria is a postdoctoral fellow who took the initiative to seek out the opportunity to be involved in lecturing. She has approached this with a mature attitude with a firm focus on developing her skills. She has followed up on her experience, responded to feedback to further develop her delivery. As a result she is making a valuable contribution to education for chemistry in the important area of teaching maths for chemists.<\/p>\n

RESEARCH<\/u><\/p>\n

ELIZAVETA SUTURINA (Chem)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Achievement; Her research in lanthanide magnetism has made an important contribution to research activity in the faculty. Authorship on 11 papers in 2017 a number of which are likely to be submitted for REF2021.\u00a0 She presented her work at the FNES Postdoctoral conference in summer 2017, \u2018Theory and modelling of lanthanide induced paramagnetic shift and relaxation enhancement\u2019 with a prize for the best talk.<\/p>\n

SAIKIRAN THARIMENA (OES)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Achievement; He is recognised for his skills which have supported OES in many areas of activity. His recent research outputs are of the highest calibre including his paper in Science in 2017 \u2018 A unified continental thickness from seismology and diamonds suggests a melt-defined plate\u2019. He also actively promotes this research to the public.<\/p>\n

THOMAS CHALK (OES)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Achievement; Exceptional research achievement including the leading of an international team in the publication of the first orbitally resolved atmospheric CO2 record beyond the late Quaternary which is recently published in PNAS. This publication is the result of painstaking and persistent effort on his part and represents an important contribution to the field.<\/p>\n

CITIZENSHIP<\/u><\/p>\n

CHRISTOPHER CAVE-AYLAND (Chem)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Achievement; A number of important contributions to the Faculty including support for the use of software ProtoMS for a number of researchers, delivery of a programming \u2018boot camp\u2019 for undergraduates, the delivery of software training workshops for industrial partners and ensuring the representation of chemistry within the University wide software community initiative.<\/p>\n

RACHEL HALE (OES)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Achievement; She exemplifies what it is to be a good citizen. She has taken on the role for leading and coordinating a large number of events for ECRs in OES that support networking, career development, and representing the views of ECRs through the Faculty steering group.<\/p>\n

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT<\/u><\/p>\n

GEMMA CRIPPS (OES)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Achievement; Increased the visibility of marine science at OES and the University through the development of large national outreach events and detailed online policy material. The events she has helped, or led, in developing are very impressive including an installation at the National History Museum and a 5 year large scale installation about the importance of ocean sediments for global cycles at Winchester Science Centre.<\/p>\n

ENTERPRISE<\/u><\/p>\n

RAY ALLAN (BioSci)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Achievement; Building teams across Highfield and SGH sites, with international collaborators with both clinical and academic staff- the ability to work across and coordinate large networks combining basic biofilm research with translational clinical research \u2013 this is having impact in the arena of combatting antibiotic resistance associated with chronic infections.<\/p>\n
