Dear Practice Educators,
We want to take the opportunity to thank you for all your hard work in supporting our students whilst they are on placement with you.
Practice Education is a key part of their physiotherapy education and enables the student to consolidate knowledge, apply theory and enhance their clinical skills in a safe and supportive learning environment. With the help of practice educators, students are able to develop their clinical reasoning and critical thinking skills together with both generic and profession-based skills crucial to their future roles as physiotherapists.
The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) mandates that students spend a minimum of 1000 hours in clinical education as an integral part of their academic programme. The University of Southampton tries to ensure that each student has a balanced sequence of placements during their three-year programme, representing a range of the diverse environments they may practice in as qualified clinicians (Learning and Development principles for CSP Accreditation of Qualifying Programmes 2015). Placements are timetabled for each year as set out in the placement modules below.
Practice education is a shared responsibility between the University, the practice educator (PE) and the student. We are committed to supporting our practice educators.
We ask that all practice educators attend an educational session at least every three years (in line with HCPC guidelines: www.hcpc-uk.org/standards/standards-of-continuing-professional-development).
If you are new to practice education/supervision or have not supervised students from the University of Southampton (UoS) before, we deliver a foundation educator programme to ensure you are comfortable with the requirements of the role. If you have previously supervised UoS students and require an update we also deliver these regularly (hsadmin@soton.ac.uk).
We are always looking to improve our services and support so, if you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
