A Gap in the Market
The team identified a gap in the market for a hobby related application specifically for university students. There are similar applications on the market for meeting new people and conversing such as Facebook and meetup but they are quite general purpose in terms of how people make connections and who they target. The proposed application is specifically aimed at and designed for university students and will connect them based on their hobbies/interests.
Automatic Matching
Applications like Facebook and Twitter make suggestions on who to follow/befriend based on mutuality, location, place of work etc. This application exploits the concept of Homophily (which humans crave) by matching users with similar hobbies together; with this approach, the team believe that richer, more long-lasting relationships can be built. This is especially important for the context in which the application will be used – University. Students are in a new environment and around a large, diverse group of people. It would take too long to meet someone with similar interests as you by using a brute force method i.e. adding everybody that goes to the same university as you, talking to them and then seeing if they have the same interest as you. This application does all the hard work by using an algorithm to automatically connect people with similar interests.
