Interface Metaphors

Interface Metaphors

Tinder uses the card and swipe interface metaphor [1]

Card

The card interface metaphor has become increasingly popular over the last few years through social media apps such as Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook and Google. Users are familiar with cards and how to interact with them as they are used in everyday life e.g. playing cards, loyalty cards, flashcards etc. The application will use the card and swipe interface metaphor to allow users to choose their hobbies.

Swipe

The ‘swipe’ metaphor,  made popular on social media by Tinder, is a key metaphor in the application. It was decided to use this metaphor as it is one that users are very familiar with and thus would easily convey to them how to use the app. Other metaphors will include linking/connecting with people, browsing profiles, liking posts. Upon registration users will be presented with a variety of hobbies on cards, they must swipe left if they are interested in it or swipe right if they are not. This will provide an interactive and engaging experience for the user for an otherwise laborious task.
