Welcome to the POPS project page. Our project is designed to enable university students – from freshers through to postgraduates – to meet likeminded people who share their hobbies and interests, in order to make friends and find people to participate in shared hobbies. POPS aims to go further than most social media platforms by giving users the freedom to share more personal information about themselves in their profile; rather than the bog standard username and bio, the platform will allow users to detail information such as hobbies, course, current/all-time favourite books/songs/artists etc. and topics of interest. This level of personalisation will allow students to make connections quicker.
People may travel from all over the world to attend university, and in doing so leave behind friends and family who they may have shared their hobbies with. It can sometimes be difficult to find new people who you can talk to and participate in some hobbies, especially if they’re quite niche. POPS wants to change this for students, and help people find you! You could be looking for anything from tabletop RPG games to rugby league to baking cakes, and everything in-between. Our goal is to match students together to better enrich student experience by helping people make friends, promote personal hobbies for people who may struggle to find participants or people to collaborate with, and in doing so, help foster personal wellbeing through social interaction at university.
By keeping our user base to university students, we enact a layer of privacy and security to our users, who know they can meet people with assurance that all POPS users are university verified, and as such, accountable. It can be difficult for people using 3rd party apps to meet others for any purpose, due to safety and anxiety fears. By limiting our user base to university students – verified using university login details – we can promote a safe environment for people’s personal interests and friendships to flourish.
