The Weekly Review follows the same format each week. The agenda is below and, in discussing the items on it, trainees and CMs consider:
- how the trainee’s practice has developed over the past week;
- the progress of the children they have taught.
If there is a placement theme that week, the trainee’s progress in this area should also be discussed.
The following is taken from page 8 of the handbook.
The Agenda
- Discussion the reflection on the targets trainees have been working on
- Have they been met or not been met?
- What has enabled or restricted this? (So what does the trainee need to keep doing or need to do?)
- Which strands of the tracker is this evidence of meeting? Can the strand be highlighted?
- What is the evidence that supports the trainee’s progress?
- Discuss the trainee’s teaching moments
- Why were the teaching moments chosen?
- E.g., the strength (TM1) moved the children on in their learning, the area of development (TM2) caused a misconception to develop
- Frame the discussion with the help of these questions:
- Tell me why you (did or decided to) …
- What do you think the impact of … was on the children’s progress (what’s the evidence?)
- Have you noticed that when you … the children … ?
- I like the way you … because …
- Have you thought about … ?
- Why were the teaching moments chosen?
- Identify the FIA and action plan (and other targets)
- Generally, the FIA should focus on Teaching Moment 2 (TM2)
- Compare the trainee’s teaching moments with those of the CM
- Why is there a difference between the chosen moments of the trainee and those of the CM?
- Is the trainee being too critical or overly concerned with other (more ambitious) aspects of practice?
The discussion should centre on the progress of the trainee and the progress of the children being taught. How is the former impacting the latter?
Trainees are encouraged to lead the discussions drawing on their own critical reflections and self-evaluations of their progress and refer to evidence to support this.
