The Principles of the PGCE (Primary) Programme

The nine Principles of Practice are included here for reference. Further details can be found in the Level 1 Class Mentor Training handbook.

The Phases of the Programme

Phase 1: Learning about teaching 1 (11 Sept.-17 Nov. 2023)
  • introducing the principles
  • challenging beliefs and attitudes about teaching
  • instilling the social purpose of teaching
  • building positive relationships with peers and university tutors
  • learning the foundations of effective teaching
  • starting to develop subject knowledge
  • starting to develop pedagogical knowledge
  • developing habits of learning through research, reflection and collaboration
Phase 2: Beginning to be a teacher (20 Nov.-15 Dec. 2023)
  • building positive relationships with children and mentors
  • beginning to see practice from the perspective of the learner
  • working with school-based experts as well as university tutors
  • beginning to put the foundations of effective teaching into practice
  • observing, discussing and analysing the practice of expert others and their own in order to see into the thinking of a teacher
Phase 3: Practising being a teacher (02 Jan.-23 Feb. 2024)
  • developing practice through planning and teaching sequences of lessons
  • moving the focus from teaching to learning
  • becoming more independent in decision making
Phase 4: Learning about teaching 2 (04 Mar.-08 Mar. 2024)
  • broadening subject and pedagogical knowledge across the curriculum
Phase 5: Developing as a teacher (11 Mar.-14 Jun. 2024)
  • broadening subject and pedagogical knowledge through the experience of a different context and KS
  • demonstrating that the learner is at the heart of the curriculum in planning and teaching
  • developing effective practice through taking greater responsibility for planning and teaching and increasingly adopting the role of a teacher
  • demonstrating that the TS are fully met by the end of this phase
Enhancement Weeks: Enhancing practice (26 Feb.-01 Mar. and 17 Jun.-21 Jun 2024)
  • address individual emerging needs
  • enriching subject and pedagogical knowledge through experience of different contexts and/or phases
