{"id":309,"date":"2012-11-15T15:59:30","date_gmt":"2012-11-15T15:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.blogs.soton.ac.uk\/wfrc\/?p=16"},"modified":"2012-11-15T15:59:30","modified_gmt":"2012-11-15T15:59:30","slug":"speaking-truth-to-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/multidisciplinary\/2012\/11\/15\/speaking-truth-to-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Speaking truth to power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/wfrc\/files\/2012\/11\/catherine_pope.jpg\"><img class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-17\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/wfrc\/files\/2012\/11\/catherine_pope-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The WFRC responds to parliamentary consultation on health workforce<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking truth to power might be a duty of researchers or \u2018public intellectuals\u2019 but we seldom have direct access to the ears of those in government.\u00a0 Instead we spend an inordinate amount of time trying to disseminate research via reports, conferences, papers and the occasional press release in the hope that policy makers will listen.\u00a0 When we heard that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/committees-archive\/health-committee\/\">House of Commons Health Committee<\/a> wanted responses to its consultation on health education, training and workforce planning it was an opportunity we could not ignore. \u00a0We were able to call on the knowledge of WFRC members based in the Faculties of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/medicine\">Medicine<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/faculties\/faculty_health_sciences.html\">Health Sciences<\/a> who educate future health professionals to point out how the mix of skills of healthcare staff is changing \u2013 for example by extended scope physiotherapists who use techniques previously only used by orthopaedic surgeons. We crafted a short response to the consultation drawing on our expertise \u2013 for example citing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhsconfed.org\/Networks\/SDONet\/Events\/PastEvents\/Pages\/Webinar-technology-adoption-in-urgent-emergency-care.aspx\">our recent research<\/a> about how information technology was being used to augment or \u2018replace\u2019 roles and at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/education\/research\/projects\/creating_an_expansive_learning_environment_in_hospital_portering.page\">healthcare workplaces as learning environments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Over a hundred individual pieces of written evidence were submitted alongside evidence from an impressive cast of witnesses ranging from Dr Peter Carter the General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, to Dr Patricia Hamilton CBE the Director of Medical Education at Department of Health. Launching the Committee\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm201213\/cmselect\/cmhealth\/6\/6i.pdf\">report<\/a> Stephen Dorrell MP criticised NHS workforce training as \u201ccomplex, inflexible and unfair\u201d and aired concerns about workforce planning in the reconfigured NHS.
