[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”4239″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow_3d”][vc_column_text]Professor Cyrus Cooper of the University of Southampton has been appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Professor Cooper, who is Director of the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit at the University, will take up the position immediately and support the Lord-Lieutenant in carrying out his functions as HM The Queen\u2019s representative in the county.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]He will still continue his role at the University, which includes leading an internationally competitive programme of research into the epidemiology of musculoskeletal disorders, most notably osteoporosis.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Professor Cooper, who was awarded an OBE for services to medical research in 2015, comments: \u201cI am thrilled to take up this prestigious role alongside my University projects. It is a tremendous honour to become Deputy Lieutenant and I look forward to carrying out my duties with the dedication and professionalism they deserve.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Professor Cooper will hold the appointment until he is 75 years old.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”reflist”]Duties of the Lord-Lieutenant include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. the arrangement of Royal visits to the county and the escort of Royal visitors as appropriate<\/li>\n
  2. participation in civic and social activity including encouragement of a wide range of voluntary activities<\/li>\n
  3. liaison with local units of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force<\/li>\n
  4. presentation of medals and awards on behalf of HM The Queen<\/li>\n
  5. responsibility for greeting Heads of State and submitting names for Royal garden parties.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
