Assessment Practices in Medicine: The Good, The Bad and The Very Bad!

AB59, South Academic Block, University Hospital Southampton

Friday 27th September 2019, 13:00-16:30

The Medical Education Innovation Network organised a half day seminar/workshop that explored the evolution of assessment methods in undergraduate medical curricula. It provided an overview of the principles of assessment practice within the BMBS curriculum at Southampton, including best practice for common assessment types.

Sponsored by the Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Ireland, the afternoon integrated a mini symposium on anatomy assessment in medical curricula, using selected examples that are transferable and applicable to educators spanning the majority of basic science subjects within the pre-clinical years. The event was intended to be as inclusive as possible, bringing together a range of academics with a mutual interest in medical curricula assessment approaches.

There were a combination of internal (Dr Bruce McManus director of undergraduate assessments) and external invited speakers (Professor D. Ceri Davies, Imperial College London, Dr Ruth Joplin, Aston University & Professor Fabio Quondamatteo, University of Glasgow), as well as an interactive workshop to enable skill development in producing high quality One Best Answer Questions.
