In the past some universities have set up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.informationweek.com\/universities-create-their-own-social-networks-for-students\/d\/d-id\/1110997?\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">social networks for students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, but many universities now just connect into mainstream platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Social media is being used broadly across higher education, and some applications are specifically designed for education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Much of the literature on social media and higher education focuses on the integration of social media websites into the classroom, but social networks in education can have a wider reach and impact than this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-358 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/meetingofminds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/266\/2018\/03\/social-media-439155_1280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/meetingofminds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/266\/2018\/03\/social-media-439155_1280.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/meetingofminds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/266\/2018\/03\/social-media-439155_1280-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/meetingofminds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/266\/2018\/03\/social-media-439155_1280-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>creative commons image from\u00a0https:\/\/pixabay.com\/en\/social-media-blogging-marketing-439155\/<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Interesting from the perspective of the design of the &#8216;MeetingoMinds&#8217; site,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0more than a quarter of students are using social networking sites to get in touch with their tutors . These findings came from\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/one-in-four-students-uses-social-media-to-contact-university-staff\/2018798.article\">a survey by the education technology charity Jisc<\/a> (Parr, 2015),<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Student Use of Social Networks to Support Academic Outcomes<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There have been studies showing positive relationships between online discussion and knowledge sharing with student learning (e.g Eidlbrahim and Al-Jabri, 2016). \u00a0Other studies, however, have found a negative relationship between social media use in learning, and student performance. Given the initially even distribution of good and poor performers within a network, over time students tend to establish new connections with peers who perform at the same level and unfriend those who are the least similar to them in terms of academic achievement\u2019 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Smirnov \u00a0and Thurner 2017). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This could be perpetuating close knit peer groups of the \u2018successful elite\u2019 and thus inequality. Research has found that one crucial factor determining a student\u2019s academic success is who they socialise with. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the issues now being investigated in social network studies, is how far social networks result in the creation of new social contacts and outcomes, rather than supplementing existing physical networks. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Althoff, Jindal and Leskovec 2017).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Shared Social Networks for Students and Academics<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It has been suggested there may be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a positive impact from social networking<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0&#8216;on the climate within the classroom when students see staff as approachable, however there may be dangers \u00a0in a negative impact on respect and credibility\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The other issue is that students may see academics as having invaded their space .. and may migrate to other social networking sites\u2019 \u00a0(<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Palmer et al 2008) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Research has suggested<\/span>\u00a0both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.igi-global.com\/chapter\/students-privacy-concerns-on-the-use-of-social-media-in-higher-education\/101168\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/status-anxiety-should-academics-be-using-social-media-25142\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">academics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> can be nervous about privacy when using social networks in a learning environment. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It has not been possible to locate specific research of student use of academic social network sites, or how students and academics might be communicating view these sites.\u00a0 T<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here are, however, some shared social networks for academics and student researchers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.methodspace.com\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MethodSpace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a multidimensional online network for the community of researchers, from students to professors, engaged in research methods. The site is created for students and researchers to network and share research, resources and debates. \u00a0This includes the option to set up <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nterest groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other Universities e.g <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.ncl.ac.uk\/socialmedia\/networking\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reading, have their own social network for researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, as does Edinburgh (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/about\/sustainability\/themes\/research-teaching\/network\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">this includes PhD students.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>By Nina Schuller<\/p>\n<p><b>References<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Althoff, T., Jindal, P., &amp; Leskovec, J.
