{"id":1504,"date":"2022-07-29T08:56:19","date_gmt":"2022-07-29T07:56:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/medicallyspeaking\/?p=1504"},"modified":"2022-07-29T08:58:11","modified_gmt":"2022-07-29T07:58:11","slug":"air-pollution-linked-to-risk-of-dementia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/medicallyspeaking\/2022\/07\/29\/air-pollution-linked-to-risk-of-dementia\/","title":{"rendered":"Air pollution linked to risk of dementia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Faculty of Medicine professor has played a key role in a new report which says air pollution is likely to increase the risk of developing dementia.<br>\u00a0<br>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/air-pollution-cognitive-decline-and-dementia\">Cognitive decline, dementia and air pollution report<\/a> was launched by the Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants.<br>\u00a0<br>Professor Roxana Carare (<a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cararegroup.org%2F&amp;data=05%7C01%7Cenews%40southampton.ac.uk%7Cbc55405a20754125f60108da70b91f2a%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0%7C0%7C637946237632117808%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=wIMnCXjRZ2ZoQANOaC27GE1MhkThFt2TM1c1s3Kvn14%3D&amp;reserved=0\">www.cararegroup.org<\/a>) was a member of the committee, which reviewed almost 70 studies that analysed how exposure to emissions affect the brain over time.<br>\u00a0<br>The report concludes that air pollution is likely to increase the risk of accelerated \u201ccognitive decline\u201d and of \u201cdeveloping dementia\u201d in older people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Carare said: \u201cAfter several years of work we have shown there is a link between the risk of dementia and air pollution, most likely driven through cerebrovascular mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlzheimer\u2019s and dementia are devastating conditions affecting millions of people around the world. Pollution is rising everywhere and will contribute to rising numbers of this disease.
