This course saw Year 9 \u00a0students design, build and test wave energy converters and supply vessels.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/maritimeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/363\/2017\/08\/smallpeice.mov\">Filming the action at smallpeice<\/a>\u00a0trials<br \/>\nThis was followed by the Marine Headstart course led by Dr Joe Banks where Year 12 students designed, built and tested tidal turbines \u2013 learning all about renewables, ship science and marine engineering.<br \/>\nWhile last but not least the Design Triathlon Summer School led by Dr Nick Townsend saw Year 12\u00a0students design, build, test and race speedboats \u2013 learning all about hydrostatics, hydrodynamics and the design process.<br \/>\nThanks to all those\u00a0who\u00a0participated and the staff and phd student who helped out over the week \u2013 it was great fun for all.<br \/>\nIf you would like to know more about these courses and engineering outreach at the University of Southampton be sure to check out.\u00a0 Similar course will take place next year and are a great opportunity to learn about maritime engineering and ship science and possible careers that follow.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.etrust.org.uk\/marine-engineering-and-nautical-science-southampton\"><u>http:\/\/www.etrust.org.uk\/marine-engineering-and-nautical-science-southampton<\/u><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/schools-colleges\/design-triathlon.page\"><u>https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/schools-colleges\/design-triathlon.page<\/u><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/schools-colleges\/marine-headstart.page\"><u>https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/schools-colleges\/marine-headstart.page<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In July we hosted not\u00a0one but\u00a0three residential engineering summer schools, seeing over 160 students visit and stay at the University to learn about Ship Science.
