About the course staff
Dr. Fraser Sturt is a maritime prehistorian and geoarchaeologist, with active research projects in the seas and islands surrounding the UK, Peru and California. Fraser has experience of developing on-line teaching resources and making best use of rich media available on the web from work in his existing modules.
Dr. Justin Dix is a marine geophysicist and marine geoarchaeologist. He brings expertise in the methods used to map the world’s oceans and seas, as well as locating buried sites in maritime contexts. Fraser and Justin have worked together on inter-disciplinary modules between OES and Humanities for a number of years, gaining experience of teaching traditionally discipline specific knowledge to broader audiences.
Dr. Lucy Blue is an internationally renowned maritime archaeologist, having run key projects in Egypt, the Red Sea and India. Her expertise not only incorporates the archaeology of these areas, but also ethnography of contemporary maritime communities. Lucy has extensive media experience, having been one of the presenters on the BBC series Oceans.
Professor Jon Adams is one of the world’s leading maritime archaeologists with expertise in medieval shipwrecks and maritime technologies. In addition, Jon has pioneered work in deep-water archaeology, adopting innovative high technology solutions to longstanding problems. He was a key member of the Mary-Rose excavation team, gaining a depth of experience that few have had the opportunity to gain since.
Dr. Helen Farr is a maritime prehistorian with specialisms in the archaeology of Mediterranean and Australasia. Her geographical knowledge adds an important breadth to this MOOC, helping to widen its appeal.
Dr. Julian Whitewright is a maritime archaeologist specialising in ancient seafaring and maritime technologies, particularly in the classical period. Julian’s expertise brings a crucial knowledge of the practicalities of sailing and seafaring in the past.
