Looking back

LifeLab is a unique initiative created in 2008 by the University of Southampton in collaboration with the National Institute for Health Research Southampton Biomedical Research Centre and University Hospital Southampton.

We continue to develop with the support of researchers from:

  • School of Human Development and Health
  • School of Healthcare Enterprise and Innovation
  • Faculty of Medicine
  • MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Centre
  • Clinical Informatics Research Unit
  • Southampton Education School, Faculty of Social Sciences

LifeLab’s state-of-the-art purpose-built educational facility is based in the heart of University Hospital Southampton. Since opening in 2014, over 13,000 young people have visited LifeLab and taken part in our educational experiences.

Looking forward

We recognise how our own health is inextricably linked to our environment. Our vision is to build on all our experience to develop “Me, My Planet and My Children’s Health”.

This approach will draw together health, scientific and environmental literacy in an education programme that is relevant and relatable for young people growing up in today’s world. In keeping with our discovery and partnership principals, this approach will be delivered hand-in-hand with teacher professional development and peer-to-peer opportunities, working with organisations across a number of sectors.
