The Languages and Social Networks Abroad Project Pedagogical Guides
Welcome to the homepage of LANGSNAP. On this website you will find teaching materials, information about the LANGSNAP project, and information about the development of students who study or work abroad as part of their degree. The website has been created in order to disseminate the teaching materials (in the form of a series of workshops and supplementary activities called the LANGSNAP Guides). Through this dissemination, we hope to encourage educators to continue to develop our understanding of and approach to students from Modern Languages and other disciplines who undertake a period of residence abroad.
The LANGSNAP project started in 2011, as a research project, entitledĀ “Social networks, target language interaction, and second language acquisition during the year abroad: A longitudinal study” (LANGSNAP Project: : ESRC research award number RES-062-23-2996). The LANGSNAP corpora include both spoken and written data produced over a 21-month period by advanced (university-level) learners of French and Spanish.
Following on from this, the LANGSNAP team has developed teaching materials to be delivered to undergraduate students preparing for residence abroad. These have been made publicly available to educators on a creative commons license via this website, and it is hoped that the materials will be used to support students before, during and after their year abroad.
