One source is the pantograph, on top of the train, which is more difficult to shield by using noise barriers. To understand pantograph noise we have developed a component-based model which takes account of realistic incoming flow conditions during train pass-by. We have compared the results of this model with measurements on running trains using a microphone array with 90 microphones.
