The parameters controlling leak noise propagation in water pipes are well-established. Here, for the first time, leak noise propagation in gas pipes is investigated and a model derived for the cross-correlation function. The characteristics of wave propagation, combined with the leak noise spectrum, are incorporated into the model to consider the effects of physical parameters, e.g. turbulence parameters, pipe parameters and flow parameters, on the cross-correlation function. Thus, the model is capable of describing the main features of the correlation results in gas pipes as well as providing an estimate of the detection limits of the leak signature.
