Across the University we are working to develop AI literacy and support for students and staff.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How are students using GenAI?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent research from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hepi.ac.uk\/2025\/02\/26\/student-generative-ai-survey-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Higher Education Policy Unit<\/a> (HEPI) indicates that most HE students are using generative AI tools in some way. HEPI reported in February 2025 that use of GenAI by undergraduates between 2024 and 2025 has rapidly increased, with 92% now reporting that they use AI in some way, and 88% for support with assessments.&nbsp;&nbsp; The same report noted that students felt staff to be \u2018better equipped\u2019 to support them in using GenAI (42%) than in 2024 (18%) but that they want more support and guidance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UoS advice for students&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our advice for students is that GenAI can be used to support their studies but should not be used for assessed work that is claimed as their own work. We advise that students should:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Always check with their tutor to understand how GenAI should\/should not be used in learning and assignments. Advice might differ between modules\/programmes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be critical of AI outputs as they often contain inaccuracies, misleading information, or do not demonstrate the level of thinking we require.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not use AI to replace their thinking\/work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use AI responsibly: learn how to use AI effectively through relevant questioning and get into the habit of checking outputs using other resources.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be aware of wider issues related to use of AI, including challenges associated with data privacy and sustainability.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/about\/governance\/regulations-policies\/policies\/using-gen-ai-during-your-studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advice to students can be found here.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bite-sized task&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this task, you will watch a short video featuring our own students talking about their use of GenAI and then consider how this might relate to the work your own students do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1 &#8211; learn<em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch this 8-minute video which features four of our own students talking about their use of AI.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How are we using Generative Artificial Intelligence tools to support our studies at Southampton?\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iifjaJGYioI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2 &#8211; do<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you have watched the video, consider how far the students\u2019 comments reflect what you know about your own students\u2019 use of GenAI and their understanding of AI. How?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talk to your own students about their use of GenAI to support their learning.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some questions you might ask your students:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How do you use GenAI to support your learning? For example, do you use it for idea generation, for notetaking or summarising, translation or another purpose?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you find GenAI useful? Why\/why not?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What would you like to know more about to use AI to support your learning on my module\/programme?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How would you feel about me \u2013 as your educator \u2013 using AI to support how I teach the module\/programme?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3 \u2013 reflect<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are your thoughts on how students are using GenAI in learning?
