The Role<\/h5>\n\n\n
How should I prepare for the role?<\/div>
You should familiarise yourself with the programme(s) that you will examine, and the modules that make up these programmes. In particular, you should look at the programme aims; the intended learning outcomes, curriculum, and teaching and assessment strategies of the programme and modules; and the link between particular modules and the programme as a whole. This information can be found through the programme specifications \/ course description documents<\/a> and module outlines provided by the School. You should also familiarise yourself with key internal and external reference points, such as the University\u2019s regulations<\/a> and Quality Handbook<\/a>, QAA Characteristics Statements<\/a>, QAA Subject Benchmark Statements<\/a>, and the requirements of accrediting bodies (if relevant).\r\n\r\nYou should also consider how you wish to carry out your duties. You can agree with the programme team at an early stage the basis on which the selection of the students\u2019 work will be made. You should ensure you receive enough evidence to determine that internal marking and classifications are of an appropriate standard and are consistent. The sample should include a range of work awarded the highest marks, fail marks, and work in each class of the award and may include some of the work of borderline candidates. You should agree with the programme team how you will engage with assessment such as practice-based learning, performance, presentations etc. You may wish to re-visit this annually to ensure you are happy with the arrangements.<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n
What happens if I move to another institution during my appointment?<\/div>

Please notify us immediately\u00a0if you move to another institution during your period of appointment.\u00a0 You can\u00a0inform the\u00a0administrative team in the School or\u00a0the Quality, Standards and Accreditation Team via the\u00a0‘contact us’ page on this site.\u00a0\u00a0The University will carry out any necessary\u00a0checks to ensure that\u00a0your change\u00a0in circumstances does not result in a conflict of interest being created.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Attending at the University<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

When am I required to attend Board of Examiners\u2019 meetings or visit the University?<\/div>

External examiners are members of the Board of Examiners for the programme(s) \/ module(s) to which they are appointed. This is set out in your Letter of Appointment and you are expected to attend a Board of Examiners at least once a year. Virtual attendance by the external examiner, using a University of Southampton approved platform such as Microsoft Teams, is considered as being \u2018in attendance\u2019 at the Board of Examiners meeting.<\/p>\n

Depending on how the Boards are organised, you may be a member of more than one Board of Examiners. The School will provide you with dates of future Boards as soon as they are available.<\/p>\n

External examiners are usually expected to visit the relevant University campus for their programme annually.\u00a0 This will normally be to attend the meeting of the Board of Examiners but may be at other times during the year if they attend the Board of Examiners meeting virtually.\u00a0 During these visits, external examiners will be asked to consider samples of assessment, meet students and the programme team.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
