{"id":511,"date":"2017-06-22T09:29:57","date_gmt":"2017-06-22T08:29:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.eurocall2017.uk\/?p=511"},"modified":"2017-06-22T09:29:57","modified_gmt":"2017-06-22T08:29:57","slug":"a-new-sig-for-eurocall-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/eurocall\/a-new-sig-for-eurocall-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"A new SIG for Eurocall 2017!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year Eurocall will see a new interesting addition to its already well established SIGs.<\/p>\n<p>Founding chair Elena Mart\u00edn-Monje from Universidad Nacional de Educaci\u00f3n a Distancia (UNED), Spain and secretary Inge de Waard, (The Open University, UK and EIT InnoEnergy) have established a new LMOOC ((Language Massive Open Online Courses) SIG to provide a forum for discussion, research findings sharing and reflect together upon the specificities and areas of development of LMOOCs.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) have consolidated in this decade as a pedagogical model with the potential to widen access to Higher Education, and dozens of universities around the world offer free online courses covering from Astrophysics to Philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Language learning has not been oblivious to this trend, and since 2012 we have had LMOOCs (Language MOOCs) \u201cdedicated Web-based online courses for second languages with unrestricted access and potentially unlimited participation (B\u00e1rcena &amp; Mart\u00edn-Monje, 2014: p.1). Teachers and researchers involved in technology-enhanced language learning have witnessed the growing interest in this field, with over 100 LMOOCs already on offer (as of February 2017), 2 monographic volumes published on the topic (Dixon &amp; Thomas, 2015; Mart\u00edn-Monje &amp; B\u00e1rcena, 2014) and panels devoted to LMOOCs at international conferences such as EuroCALL.<\/p>\n<p>Objectives of LMOOC SIG:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To gather information on ongoing research and projects developed by members of the SIG, and disseminate it via a dedicated website.<\/li>\n<li>To share information on courses, seminars, conferences, publications, etc.<\/li>\n<li>To promote academic discussion related to LMOOCs.<\/li>\n<li>To organise workshops and symposia for exchanging experiences and ideas.<\/li>\n<li>To encourage Open Practices, collaboration and possible visits to each other\u2019s institutions with the aim of setting up joint projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some suggested areas of development for the LMOOC SIG could include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Internationalization and L2 learning through MOOCs<\/li>\n<li>Technical and pedagogical issues<\/li>\n<li>MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning) &amp; MOOCs<\/li>\n<li>Cultural studies and MFL (Modern Foreign Language)<\/li>\n<li>Integration of LMOOCs in Formal Education<\/li>\n<li>LMOOCs for social integration and employability<\/li>\n<li>Task design in LMOOCs<\/li>\n<li>Teacher and student roles<\/li>\n<li>Social interaction in LMOOCs<\/li>\n<li>Learning Analytics and LMOOCs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>An introduction to this new special interest group and an invitation to join at EuroCALL 2017 in Southampton.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k0jlOTx9Vl8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year Eurocall will see a new interesting addition to its already well established SIGs.
