Your successful response to those challenges faced during the year abroad will also\u00a0give academic staff a good basis on which to write a reference,\u00a0which will\u00a0support your applications for jobs or further study.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Employers are keen to identify prospective employees who have positive attitudes to work, show initiative, can work independently, can manage a project and can work to deadlines. Many of these skills are developed during research abroad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Did you communicate effectively with your supervisor?<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Did you plan the various stages of your project and meet the deadlines for the submission of drafts?<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Did you demonstrate the ability to work independently?<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Did you show initiative?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>All the above are valuable attributes from the perspective of a future employer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Whilst conducting your fieldwork and writing up your project, you have also gained valuable skills which can be commented on in your CV or job applications, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">The ability to work independently during your research\u00a0and write up<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Time management skills by planning your data collection and meeting YARP deadlines<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">The ability to commit to a large piece of work from start to finish<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Showing initiative and originality by choosing your own topic<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Problem solving and analytic skills when interpreting your data<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">A high level of written communication in the TL<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To get the most out of your year abroad research, it\u2019s important to think about the <a title=\"Choosing a Research Method\" href=\"http:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/ethnographicencounters\/2015\/04\/16\/advice-yarp\/\">type of project<\/a> you would like to undertake, and which <a title=\"Transferable Skills &amp; Research Methods\" href=\"http:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/ethnographicencounters\/2015\/07\/17\/transferableskills\/\">transferable skills<\/a> you will be developing as a part of that.
