Live visuals at DOCK 34

Glitch slashes 1

This is a video I made exploring rhythm through simply using a dash. By putting such harsh limitations on what the visual is, it allows for so much experimentation on compositions and sequences. Similar to Frank Bretschneider’s super trigger, the simple black and white flashing images feel fluid and coherent alongside the sound. The interesting thing about a super fast flashing visual and a constant beat (regardless of if they are in time or not) your brain wants them to be perfectly in time so tricks you into believing they are. (The flashing dashes are not purposefully put in time with the sound.)

I made the music that goes along with the raw video which is a constant kick beat with industrial techno sounds to marry the harsh sounds and striking visuals.

In the second video you can see the visuals being used at a live techno event at ‘The Bunker’ in Southampton. We projected onto two columns of pyramids and a white screen that was put over the speaker. The visuals worked well and got good feedback from the crowd and DJs playing on the night.

Candle Gazing (Trataka)

Trataka is an ancient relaxation technique which focuses the mind and eyes on an object. It is traditionally practiced with a candle in front of the person in which they stare at using their central gaze. Although there has been little scientific research into this practice, the benefits are heard from practitioners who have been involved in the practice for years. Some of these benefits include: improving concentration and memory, helping with insomnia, calming anxiety, and making the eyes stronger.

I thought this technique supported my idea of creating a video which allowed the audience to gaze into a virtual fire and get lost in it. The background music will hopefully add to the peaceful vibe. My video could even be used as a form of meditation.

Bollywood

The video clip is a Bollywood video music the first part on the clip before 1:00 when the couple look at each other without touching was something I got inspiration for my film. Because the look between them felt very intense. The only sound was the music they don’t talk and this make you focus on them looking at each other. I could used this concept in my commercial.

Dior Sauvage

I am doing a BA in Fine Arts and I am looking to find a way to create a sound in only 30 seconds, no more, no less. I have looked at different types of films and how the sounds create different feelings. Either making the audience feel terrified, scared, excited or passionate. I then discovered the advertising/commercial of men’s cologne and I found it fascinating because it looks so abstract and artistic. There are so many different mediums of advertising men’s cologne. The first one that comes to mind is Dior Sauvage starring Johnny Depp. In it he is running away from the city, heading to the desert and seeing animals that go past him. These animals are symbolic of feelings of strength, freedom and mystery. In the first scene the soundtrack is music being played on the guitar by Johnny Depp. This is more rock music but in the last 30 seconds the music changes and goes back and forth between rock and quiet, mysterious sounds. I looked at this as inspiration for my film, but Dior is a very popular brand so I looked for a different brand, which is less commonly seen.

Californian Wildfires 2017

This video contains a compilation of footage of the wildfires which combusted over the state of California, USA in December 2017. These were devastating natural events but I cannot help but find these fires extremely mesmerising to watch.

This relaxing/calm response to fire is quite common among humans, and is thought to be evolutionary. Cavemen would have associated the flickering light, sounds, smells and warmth of campfires with relaxation, gathering and friendship. Therefore, even though many people nowadays aren’t as experienced with fire as those in the stone-age, we still share the same associations with it. Our blood pressure actually drops when staring at a flame, causing this relaxed state.

I aim to create a video which is influenced by my chosen sound, to capture the transfixation we experience when watching any form of fire, from the size of a small flame, to a huge wildfire. I want the audience to get lost and captivated with the combination of the sound and visuals in my video.

Ed Sheeran – I See Fire (Kygo Remix)

Ed Sheeran’s original song ‘I See Fire’ has been remixed by musician, DJ, and songwriter Kygo. Its fast paced and folky tones, using wind instruments, remind me of a fairytale/mystical tune. Kygo also adds a background beat which creates a more contemporary and modern tone;  quite a common trait when creating remixes. I would like to explore the echoey effect used in this version as I think it helps create a mesmerising, calm, and trance-like state for the audience, which is what I would like to portray in my video.
