Most European ditched enclosures were constructed by people living during the period known as the Neolithic. The tradition continued through the last part of the Neolithic before the Bronze Age, which is called Late Neolithic in some areas and Copper Age or Chalcolithic in others. Those were times of progressive expansion of the features that define the Neolithic across Europe. Chief amongst those features are agriculture and livestock breeding, but also technologies like pottery, polished stone or, later, metalworking.
