Others gain graduate entry into medicine, go into teacher training or start in the civil service.<\/p>\n<p>The skills taught in biological sciences give a good scientific background, a mass of knowledge in varying fields, and great writing skills. This means that whether you want to pursue a career in biological sciences or not, you have the option to pursue a variety of careers and apply your skills in a range of contexts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-935 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/discoverneuroscience\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2018\/07\/biology-degree-300x146.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/discoverneuroscience\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2018\/07\/biology-degree-300x146.png 300w, https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/discoverneuroscience\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2018\/07\/biology-degree.png 710w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Work Experience<\/h2>\n<p>Here you can explore some options to get work experience in <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips8'>Neuroscience<\/span> or other science, technology, engineering, or mathematical (STEM) subjects.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sotsef.co.uk\/\">University of Southampton Science and Engineering Festival<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is an annual event that features an opportunity for the general public to engage with STEM subjects, including <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips8'>Neuroscience<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuffieldfoundation.org\/nuffield-research-placements\">Nuffield Research Placements<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0are available for students in their first year of a post-16 STEM-based educational programme.<\/p>\n<p>Outreach\/engagement activities organised by University departments with a <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips8'>Neuroscience<\/span> component:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/biosci\/outreach\/index.page\">Biological Sciences<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/psychology\/outreach\/index.page\">Psychology<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/medicine\/outreach\/index.page\">Medicine<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/chemistry\/outreach\/index.page\">Chemistry<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Included are work shadowing or practical experiences for 6th form students as well as interactive lectures and hands-on activities for younger age groups.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/song\/\">School visits or other custom outreach\/engagement activities<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0can be arranged with University of Southampton neuroscientists. These are accommodated on an ad hoc basis based on availability.
