{"id":99,"date":"2015-05-27T13:26:45","date_gmt":"2015-05-27T13:26:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.efolio.soton.ac.uk\/blog\/digitallearning\/?p=99"},"modified":"2023-08-15T16:25:56","modified_gmt":"2023-08-15T15:25:56","slug":"ipad-coffee-club-sgh-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/2015\/05\/27\/ipad-coffee-club-sgh-3\/","title":{"rendered":"iPAD Coffee Club @ SGH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was great to have a record seventeen attendees along to the latest iPAD coffee club at SGH, with a range of devices.<\/p>\n<p>We talked about how new users might set up their devices to support them at work:<\/p>\n<p>Setting up your work email on your device: see iSolutions help <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/isolutions\/services\/imap_service\/faq.php#231\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Setting up the VPN: see iSolutions help <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/isolutions\/services\/vpn_service\/faq.php#634\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Download the <b>VMWare Horizon<\/b> app to connect to your university desktop from your device; further instructions are given in the guides <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/isolutions\/services\/southampton_virtual_environment\/faq.php#974\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some useful apps that were discussed were:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The <b>Eduroam Companion<\/b> app that allows you to locate Eduroam hotspots wherever you are<br \/>\n&#8211; <b>Evernote<\/b> can be used to manage notes and link these to other apps<br \/>\n&#8211; The <b>Dropbox<\/b> app, for sharing and storing files<br \/>\n&#8211; Apps that allow you to use your device as a scanner, such as <b>ScannerMini<\/b>, <b>CamScan<\/b> (Lite is the free version), and <b>DocScan HD<\/b><br \/>\n&#8211; The <b>Adobe Acrobat<\/b> app, which allows you to annotate pdfs and to read documents offline on your device<br \/>\n&#8211; <b>RefMe<\/b>, that can read book and journal barcodes and help manage references<br \/>\n&#8211; The Microsoft Office apps for <b>Word<\/b>, <b>Excel<\/b> and <b>Powerpoint<\/b>. Apple\u2019s <b>Pages<\/b>, <b>Numbers<\/b> and <b>KeyNote<\/b> are free for newer iPad users<br \/>\n&#8211; <b>Explain Everything<\/b> and the free alternative <b>ShowMe<\/b> can be used to record animated tutorials, with narration.<\/p>\n<p>Note that apps available for iPads may not always be available for iPhones &#8211; so check which option you are searching for in the App Store.<\/p>\n<p>Do comment below if there is anything you\u2019d like to add, or you have any questions.<\/p>\n<p>Our next session at SGH is 10-11am on July 8th, in LF8.
