Podcasts offer an intimate, personal way to connect to audiences, inviting them into stories, conversations and discussions in a way that is distinctive and refreshing. Podcasting offers the opportunity to combine learning, research, journalism and storytelling. Plan your content<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>At the University&#8217;s Podcasting Micro-conference (#<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=#sotonpod16\">sotonpod16<\/a>)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/WRmCITL0Hds\">Dave Pickering<\/a>&nbsp;reminded us that the first listener is yourself. What would you like to hear about? &nbsp;Is there an audience that\u2019s not being served? Are there topics that you know a great deal about but aren\u2019t widely known about?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.&nbsp;You need some kit<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the benefits of podcasting rather than radio production is the relatively low-fi nature of creating these audio files. In many cases recording can be done on a phone, laptop or tablet using one or two of the many brilliant apps for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicinstrumentscenter.com\/best-voice-recorder-app\/?msID=acd67bdd-acb0-415a-b433-d24982ccb158\">iphone<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/android.appstorm.net\/roundups\/utilities-roundups\/10-powerful-audio-recording-apps\/\">android<\/a>&nbsp;that are available. You might want to augment the microphone on your digital device by purchasing one that can plug in via&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/s\/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_1_4?url=search-alias%3Dmi&amp;field-keywords=usb+microphone&amp;sprefix=usb+%2Cmi%2C136\">usb<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Ultra-Compact-Microphone-iPhone-Touch\/dp\/B007517AKK\">thunderbolt<\/a>&nbsp;connection. Small tie-mics can be used discreetly if you\u2019re recording in public places. Finally, dedicated audio recorders such as the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Recording-and-Computers\/Zoom-H4n-SP-Handheld-Digital-Recorder\/14SF?origin=product-ads&amp;&amp;utm_campaign=PLA+Shop+-+Zoom&amp;&amp;utm_medium=vertical_search&amp;&amp;network=google&amp;&amp;adgroup=2+-+Brand+Level+-+Zoom&amp;&amp;merchant_id=1279443&amp;&amp;product_id=52863d1&amp;&amp;product_country=GB&amp;&amp;product_partition_id=83697488293&amp;&amp;gclid=Cj0KEQjw1K2_BRC0s6jtgJzB-aMBEiQA-WzDMfbwu7J8OgqyMQUYvAzGWkeqabXzI3wiLBvZbWywW2caAoa08P8HAQ\">Zoom H4<\/a>&nbsp;offer incredible quality and a number of inputs for microphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Follow an outline<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You might not want to script every part, but creating a structure for your podcast, with an introduction, setup, background to your interviewee or contributor, different sections and spots really helps your listeners know where one part ends and another begins. You might include stings or silences, but it\u2019s important to use sound as you would punctuation in a piece of writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Tell the story<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Get personal, storytelling is how we communicate and engage people, use all the tools that storytellers have to hand, humour, suspense, intrigue, drama. Your story should have a beginning, middle and end, but to paraphrase&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2011\/jul\/12\/jean-luc-godard-film-socialisme\">Godard<\/a>, not necessarily in that order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.&nbsp;Edit<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter how fluent you are in your speech and how much you enjoyed talking to your guest, you will need to edit with ruthless efficiency, making sure you cut out the waffle and bring the gems to the surface. Remember though that there\u2019s huge value in humour, in the inflections of speech and the throwaway or off guard comments. Being human is what makes your podcast listenable. If you really don\u2019t want those parts, then it might be more appropriate to publish a paper or article. Remember why you chose to podcast in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re using an app to record your audio, then often you can edit in the same place or download clips to your PC or laptop. If you\u2019re using Adobe Audition or Audacity, then be sure to check out&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/linkedinlearning\/index.page\">LinkedIn Learning<\/a>&nbsp;or search for online tutorials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Create an engaging package<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not just about the podcast, you need to support and nurture it\u200a\u2014\u200awhilst you may not want to consciously brand your podcast, it\u2019s important that you give it a visual identity. You need a strong image, good copy writing and soon a style will emerge that is recognisable to your audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7.&nbsp;Host your podcast<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many ways to do this, but one of the most effective is to use apple\u2019s iTunes or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/courses\/free-online-learning.page#itunesu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iTunesU<\/a>&nbsp;sites. Apple still seems to sit firmly at the centre of the internet podcasting ecosystem. Many podcasters load their files onto soundcloud for instance, which can provide an RSS feed for iTunes. In turn, there are a great many hosting providers, including the excellent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.libsyn.com\/\">libsyn<\/a>&nbsp;which will let you upload shownotes and links to accompany your podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Keep going!<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can get beyond the magic episode number seven then statistically you\u2019ll be able to sustain a podcast for an entire series. You\u2019re allowed to take a break once in a while or move on when you feel you\u2019ve exhausted a subject, but don\u2019t forget to take your listeners with you.
