\"ecoffee<\/p>\n

In December’s eCoffee session, Nick Evans<\/a>\u00a0talked about his experiences in podcasting.\u00a0 He and Steve Lee<\/a>\u00a0co-create the popular fortnightly podcast The Science Shed<\/a>, described as “an irreverent ramble through the undergrowth of academia”.\u00a0 The half-hour podcasts involve discussion of a range of topics\u00a0that both entertain and inform,\u00a0encouraging\u00a0engagement with science and with academia.<\/p>\n

Nick talked through the\u00a0process of creating and distributing a podcast,\u00a0sharing lots of great advice for anyone who might want to have a go themselves.<\/p>\n

Listening<\/h2>\n

Listening to podcasts online is an option, but numerous free apps will allow you to download podcasts for offline listening, for instance, while commuting to work.\u00a0 Nick recommended\u00a0Podcast Addict<\/a> (for Android) but there are many options out there.\u00a0 Twitter is a good source of recommendations or peers may have useful suggestions.<\/p>\n

Planning<\/h2>\n

The Science Shed was inspired by podcasts that Nick and Steve enjoyed listening to, and is built around the kind of conversations they might have anyway.\u00a0 Ideas for content come from anything interesting that happens day-to-day, or stories in the news.\u00a0 While they\u00a0sometimes read around topics they plan to talk about, the podcasts aren’t\u00a0scripted.\u00a0\u00a0They should\u00a0feel informal, although Nick mentioned the need to\u00a0be aware of\u00a0legal issues\u00a0such as defamation.<\/p>\n

In planning the podcast name, it’s important to consider how easily users will be able to find it – is it distinct enough (but easy to remember)?<\/p>\n

Recording<\/h2>\n

\"ecoffeeInitially, Nick’s podcasts were recorded with a USB mic plugged into a laptop, which is a good way to get started. Over time, Nick and Steve invested in a zoom recorder, popping filter and mic stands for more professional sound quality.<\/p>\n

Editing<\/h2>\n

The raw sound recordings are captured as wav files on an SD card, which can be loaded onto a laptop for editing.\u00a0 \u00a0The free programme\u00a0Audacity<\/a>\u00a0allows easy editing of multiple tracks, allowing content to be removed, moved or added.\u00a0 It’s possible to adjust levels and add in sound effects or jingles, which can be sourced for free online.<\/p>\n

If you\u00a0need to record and edit on a mobile device, the\u00a0Ferrite Recording Studio<\/a>\u00a0app is another option.<\/p>\n

Distributing<\/h2>\n

Once editing is completed, the audio file is exported as an mp3 and then uploaded to\u00a0SoundCloud<\/a>.\u00a0 This platform is free to use, also offering a Pro alternative with greater capacity and\u00a0more detailed statistics.\u00a0 Users can subscribe to the podcast and feed back\u00a0in the comments section, with\u00a0updates shared to other sites through the\u00a0RSS feed.<\/p>\n

There is a plethora of podcasts out there, so inventive titles that capture the attention of potential listeners help.\u00a0\u00a0The Science Shed<\/a> has some good examples!<\/p>\n
