{"id":74,"date":"2016-12-21T13:01:43","date_gmt":"2016-12-21T13:01:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.efolio.soton.ac.uk\/blog\/digitallearning\/?p=74"},"modified":"2023-08-15T16:48:13","modified_gmt":"2023-08-15T15:48:13","slug":"ecoffee-sgh-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/2016\/12\/21\/ecoffee-sgh-4\/","title":{"rendered":"ecoffee @ SGH: 12 apps of Christmas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3032\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2017\/07\/ecoffee%40sgh.jpg?resize=300%2C182\" alt=\"e-coffee@sgh\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\">December\u2019s <strong>e-coffee@SGH<\/strong> explored some of the 12 apps of Christmas recommended by <a href=\"https:\/\/the12appsofchristmas2016.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dublin Institute of Technology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/openeducation.blackboard.com\/mooc-catalog\/courseDetails\/view?course_id=_811_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Regent\u2019s University London<\/a>. Both discuss how the apps suggested can be used in education, with case studies and examples.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sway.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sway<\/a> is increasingly being used to create interactive presentations that students can work through (or create) independently.&nbsp; As part of Office 365, it is possible to log in with university details.&nbsp; Presentations can include links, images, embedded video and tweets.&nbsp; Although the app version offers fewer options, it is a quick means of presenting information in a visually appealing and engaging way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/create.lensoo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lensoo Create<\/a>&nbsp;is an interactive whiteboard app, allowing users to create narrated videos to demonstrate or explain concepts.&nbsp; It is a free app that is similar to the popular <a href=\"https:\/\/explaineverything.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Explain Everything<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another imaginative way of capturing learning is using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cateater.com\/stopmotionstudio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stop Motion Studio<\/a> which offers a simple means of creating stop-motion animations &#8211;&nbsp;photograph a series of images, add audio or text as needed and the app does the rest.<\/p>\n<p>Other useful apps to support learning suggested included <a href=\"https:\/\/mindnode.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mind Node<\/a>, a mindmapping tool, and <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/gb\/app\/myscript-mathpad-handwriting\/id674996719?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MathPad<\/a>, which converts handwritten equations into digital format.<\/p>\n<p>We discussed free vs paid apps, talking about the fact that paying for apps for personal use is often valuable, although if students are being asked to download apps to be used in class teaching, it helps to have good free apps available.&nbsp; One suggestion was to look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeek.me\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zeek<\/a>&nbsp;for discounted gift cards, or to look out for the iTunes free app of the week, for instance by following the Twitter hashtag #freeappoftheweek.<\/p>\n<p>The other theme explored during the session was augmented reality apps, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quivervision.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quiver<\/a>&nbsp;which generates 3D animations from colourings, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blippar.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blippar<\/a>, which scans and identify objects in your environment, leading to further information.<\/p>\n<p>We will be picking up this theme in out next session on Feb 9<sup>th<\/sup>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/iliad\/news\/events\/2017\/02\/09-02-2017-ecoffee-sgh.page?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thinglink: the basics and beyond<\/a>. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinglink.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thinglink<\/a>&nbsp;is a simple tool for making images interactive using a range of existing resources, and the session will also look at using this to create simple virtual environments with one app, a couple of photos and a web browser.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>December\u2019s e-coffee@SGH explored some of the 12 apps of Christmas recommended by Dublin Institute of Technology and Regent\u2019s University London.
