{"id":66,"date":"2017-02-13T12:54:56","date_gmt":"2017-02-13T12:54:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.efolio.soton.ac.uk\/blog\/digitallearning\/?p=66"},"modified":"2023-08-15T16:49:18","modified_gmt":"2023-08-15T15:49:18","slug":"ecoffee-sgh-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/2017\/02\/13\/ecoffee-sgh-3\/","title":{"rendered":"ecoffee @ SGH: Thinglink by by Sarah Fielding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3032\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2017\/07\/ecoffee%40sgh.jpg?resize=300%2C182\" alt=\"e-coffee@sgh\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\">February\u2019s e-coffee session&nbsp;was led by Sarah Fielding, exploring possible uses of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinglink.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thinglink<\/a>, a tool for making interactive diagrams and videos.<\/p>\n<p>Signing up for a basic account gives you access to upload 2D images and label these with a series of hotspots.&nbsp; Each hotspot can link to an image or weblink as well as a text description.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinglink.com\/video\/844581796602445824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3283 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2017\/07\/Titchfield-Abbey.png?resize=300%2C168\" alt=\"Titchfield Abbey\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\"><\/a>Going a step further, Sarah showed some examples of 360\u00b0 images, with different pictures at a single location linked and labelled to provide a virtual tour.&nbsp; Sarah\u2019s blog post explaining how she created a tour of the university\u2019s Valley Gardens is <a href=\"http:\/\/techknapping.co.uk\/virtually-there-experiments-with-thinglinks-beta-vr-editor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>&nbsp;and a further example is Sarah\u2019s Titchfield Abbey tour <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinglink.com\/video\/844581796602445824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To capture a 360\u00b0 image, it\u2019s possible to use an app like Occipital\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/occipital.com\/360\/app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">360 Panorama<\/a>.&nbsp; As you film your image, the app guides you through filling a grid to ensure you\u2019ve captured every angle. It\u2019s then possible to save the image as a jpeg in order to upload it to Thinglink.&nbsp; If you have access to a 360\u00b0 camera, that would be another option.<\/p>\n<p>360\u00b0 images on Thinglink need to have a 2:1 aspect ratio (so the width is double the height).&nbsp; The saved 360\u00b0 image may need resizing to fit this specification \u2013 this can be done simply in a programme like Paint, or Photoshop could be used for more detailed editing.<\/p>\n<p>Once the image is uploaded to Thinglink, hotspots can be added including embedded media such as video or maps, as well as combinations of images, audio, text and weblinks (see <a href=\"http:\/\/support.thinglink.com\/articles\/360-vr\/features-and-specifications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thinglink help<\/a> for further details).<\/p>\n<p>It is also possible to link a series of 360 images, and set up arrow hotspots to transition from one image to another, further building the virtual environment as in Sarah\u2019s examples.<\/p>\n<p>Settings allow the finished resource to be made public or unlisted, and embed code is available so that it can be added within Blackboard, for instance.<\/p>\n<p>We talked about possible uses for these in education, for instance to familiarise students with a new learning space, ask them to identify hazards in a particular environment, or get them to create their own examples to capture key information from a field trip.
