{"id":63,"date":"2017-03-17T12:46:41","date_gmt":"2017-03-17T12:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.efolio.soton.ac.uk\/blog\/digitallearning\/?p=63"},"modified":"2023-08-15T16:51:27","modified_gmt":"2023-08-15T15:51:27","slug":"ecoffee-sgh-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/2017\/03\/17\/ecoffee-sgh-2\/","title":{"rendered":"ecoffee @ SGH: Some AR and VR tools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this month\u2019s <strong>e-coffee@SGH<\/strong> session, Daryl Peel from the Digital Learning team demonstrated two tools that can help users familiarise themselves with a physical space, or even use a physical space to help familiarise users with a topic.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3532\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2017\/07\/Actionbound_screenshot.png?resize=237%2C300\" alt=\"Actionbound_screenshot\" width=\"237\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.actionbound.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ActionBound<\/a> offers a means of creating interactive scavenger hunts, using GPS to recognise a location, and guiding users through a series of activities as they move around the space.&nbsp; We discussed its potential for induction and orientation, as shown in Daryl\u2019s example using the WSA campus library.&nbsp; Quiz questions at different points can help reveal new information or re-emphasise key knowledge, and there is the option to gamify activities with the facility to set scores and time limits.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3533 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2017\/07\/Thinglink_WSA.png?resize=300%2C188\" alt=\"Thinglink_WSA\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\"><br \/>\nEven before users visit a location, there is the opportunity to tour it virtually using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinglink.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ThingLink<\/a> \u2013 or to revisit it as a reminder afterwards. Following on from <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/iliadcommunity\/2017\/02\/13\/e-coffee-sgh-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last month\u2019s session<\/a> exploring this tool, Daryl showed what he is working on using ThingLink\u2019s 360\u00b0 tool.&nbsp; Hotspots highlight areas of particular interest and can reveal further detail, or link out to associated information.<\/p>\n<p>Daryl also introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/life-saver.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LifeSaver<\/a>, which uses interactive film to help educate users on how to respond in a medical emergency. &nbsp;A succession of simple choices, high-quality video and working against the clock combine to make this an exciting and memorable way to learn.<\/p>\n<p>If you would be interested in working with the Digital Learning team to develop your own resource using these (or similar) tools, then do get in touch.<\/p>\n<p>In our next session, we will be focusing on Twitter.&nbsp; Do join us in LF9 on Thurs 27<sup>th<\/sup> April, 10-11am to find out more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this month\u2019s e-coffee@SGH session, Daryl Peel from the Digital Learning team demonstrated two tools that can help users familiarise themselves with a physical space, or even use a physical space to help familiarise users with a topic.
