This was an online conference about <a href=\"http:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/themes\/universal-design-for-learning-2\/\">Universal Design for Learning<\/a> (UDL) in Higher Education. It was our first time attending this event. The conference was wholly online, so we didn&#8217;t have to allow for significant travel time or the cost of flights and hotels, however, we did need to work on North American hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a packed schedule for two days, alongside opportunities for networking. Unsurprisingly, most of the presenters and participants were from the USA and Canada, but there was also a small contingent of Irish delegates, mostly from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"AHEAD (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ahead.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\">AHEAD<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At some point in the near future, fully accessible recordings from the event, alongside additional resources, will become available on the UDLHE webpages, so I&#8217;m not going to try to replicate that here. Instead, I thought I&#8217;d share some of my insights from the event as well as links to useful resources that others shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Podcasts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a number of podcasts about Universal Design for Learning that may be of interest to you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Think UDL podcast (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/thinkudl.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Think UDL podcast<\/a>. Lillian Nave, the keynote speaker at UDLHE Digicon, hosts this podcast. It focuses on post-secondary education.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"UDL in 15 min (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/theudlapproach.com\/podcasts\/\" target=\"_blank\">UDL in 15 min<\/a>. Hosted by Loui Lord Nelson. Many of the guests on this podcast work in primary or secondary education. It can be used for annotating PDFs and other files. This app costs ~\u00a38.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"myHomework (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/myhomeworkapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">myHomework<\/a> is a student planner app.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/note.ly\/#\" target=\"_blank\">Note.ly<\/a> visual workspace &#8211; this is a similar tool to Padlet.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Random.org (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.random.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Random.org<\/a> is a random generator website that offers a range of free services and information about how you might use them. <\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"SensusAccess convert a file (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sensusaccess.com\/convert-a-file\/\" target=\"_blank\">SensusAccess convert a file<\/a> is similar to the Ally file transformer as it can convert a range of documents into alternative accessible file formats. <\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/tomato-timer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">TomatoTimer<\/a> is a 25-minute timer for anyone who uses the &#8216;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/francescocirillo.com\/pages\/pomodoro-technique\" target=\"_blank\">Pomodoro technique<\/a>&#8216;.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Tricider (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tricider.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tricider<\/a> is a free social voting tool that does not require registration. If you choose to register, there are further features available. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other online resources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resources relating to pedagogical approaches<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olicav.com\/#\/graphic-organisers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dual coding and graphic organisers.<\/a> This site on visual teaching strategies was created by Oliver Caviglioli, who writes about dual coding or the use of visuals and text for teaching.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uk.ixl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">IXL<\/a> contains resources for use with children aged 4-18. These can be tailored to match the area you are in. (The resources match education in 15 countries or regions, including the USA, UK and &#8216;Latin America&#8217;).<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pz.harvard.edu\/thinking-routines\" target=\"_blank\">Project Zero\u2019s Thinking Routine Toolbox<\/a>. Project Zero is a research project at Harvard Graduate School of Education. Thinking routines are a short series of steps to guide someone&#8217;s thought process. The toolbox includes a range of resources to accompany each of the thinking routines that have been identified by the research group. This resource is useful for anyone who is planning lessons and wants to consider alternative teaching techniques. <\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"20 tips for teaching an accessible online course (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/doit\/20-tips-teaching-accessible-online-course\" target=\"_blank\">20 tips for teaching an accessible online course<\/a> by Sheryl Burgstahler. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resources that can be downloaded or printed<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Houghton Mifflin Harcourt offer a number of free <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hmhco.com\/blog\/free-graphic-organizer-templates\" target=\"_blank\">printable graphic organizer templates<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/thenounproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The noun project (opens in a new tab)\">The noun project<\/a> &#8211; icons for everything.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other resources shared in UDLHE Digicon presentations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"UDLers Unite - Shared resources (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/williamssar1\/13qtsht8m4byjqfm\" target=\"_blank\">UDLers Unite &#8211; Shared resources<\/a>. This is a Padlet wall where conference delegates shared resources that they had found helpful. The resources are divided into categories.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Center for Universal Design in Education (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/doit\/programs\/center-universal-design-education\/overview\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Universal Design in Education<\/a> (CUDE). This Centre is directed by the DO-IT Center at the University of Washington. They have a lot of useful resources and links on their website.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"What is Executive Function? (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.understood.org\/en\/learning-thinking-differences\/child-learning-disabilities\/executive-functioning-issues\/what-is-executive-function\" target=\"_blank\">What is Executive Function?<\/a> by The Understood team. This is a well-written page with summaries and short videos.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Supporting Executive Function Skills in Online Learning through&nbsp;UDL Principles (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1zisDfklmSN-ufOvdIlvKdWAoOXZLwdr64KGkrgZOKaQ\/edit#slide=id.p\" target=\"_blank\">Supporting Executive Function Skills in Online Learning through&nbsp;UDL Principles<\/a>. This is a helpful introduction to Executive Functioning skills. It includes links to a range of tools and tool-types that you may want to consider using with your students.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Promoting Faculty uptake of UDL Learning resources: a roundtable discussion (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/amelia_d_matre\/UDLHE_Roundtable\" target=\"_blank\">Promoting Faculty uptake of UDL Learning resources: a roundtable discussion<\/a>. This Padlet wall includes suggestions that were crowdsourced from participants at UDLHE Digicon. It is divided into case studies, such as how to promote UDL to educators, how to promote UDL of videos and the role of students in promoting accessibility.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Accurate captions: The Ninja YouTube method (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/innospire.org\/ninjayoutube\/\" target=\"_blank\">Accurate captions: The Ninja YouTube method.<\/a> In this video, Eric J. Moore explains how to edit captions more efficiently.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"755\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GetP3VUSMhc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UDL qualifications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are various credentials that demonstrate someone&#8217;s knowledge of UDL as well as a range of in-house badges that have been designed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"CAST (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cast.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">CAST<\/a> (formerly Center for Applied Special Technology) has worked with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Learning Designed (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.learningdesigned.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Learning Designed<\/a> to create two credentials: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"UDL Associate Level 1 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.learningdesigned.org\/content\/udl-associate-credential\" target=\"_blank\">UDL Associate Level 1<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"UDL Core Level 2 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.learningdesigned.org\/content\/udl-core-credential-level-2\" target=\"_blank\">UDL Core Level 2<\/a>.<\/li><li>Ravinder Brar and Jessica Patterson presented about George Brown University&#8217;s (internal) UDL certificate. They shared <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"their model for UDL implementation (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1MXOPWbfw1DX2OXWOd5C_gqIA_EhyuRlo\" target=\"_blank\">their model for UDL implementation<\/a>, which others may want to adapt as well as an <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"extensive list of resources for anyone looking to develop their own certificate course (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1MXOPWbfw1DX2OXWOd5C_gqIA_EhyuRlo\" target=\"_blank\">extensive list of resources for anyone looking to develop their own certificate course<\/a>. The George Brown University website has further information about how UDL is implemented there: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Leveraging a UDL mindset to guide alternate delivery course development (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.georgebrown.ca\/faculty\/teaching-and-learning-exchange\/academic-support\/academic-continuity\/leveraging-a-udl-mindset\" target=\"_blank\">Leveraging a UDL mindset to guide alternate delivery course development<\/a>.<\/li><li>As part of the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching &amp; Learning&#8217;s open-access digital badge initiative,&nbsp;AHEAD and UCD Access &amp; Lifelong Learning&nbsp;teamed up to create the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"digital badge for Universal Design in Teaching &amp; Learning (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ahead.ie\/udl-digitalbadge\" target=\"_blank\">digital badge for Universal Design in Teaching &amp; Learning<\/a>. Although the badge is only available to people in the Republic of Ireland, the resources have a Creative Commons licence and can be downloaded from the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning's website (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/opencourses.teachingandlearning.ie\/open_course\/universal-design-in-teaching-and-learning\/#1507082998400-7cb7f351-ab38\" target=\"_blank\">National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning&#8217;s website<\/a>. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UDL Networks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"UDLHE Network (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/udl-irn.org\/udlhe-network\/\" target=\"_blank\">UDLHE Network<\/a> (A Universal Design for Learning Implementation &amp; Research Network Special Interest Group). This network sends out a regular newsletter and holds quarterly Zoom meetings.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other relevant conferences\/events<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"2021 Summit on demand (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/summit.udl-irn.org\/registration\" target=\"_blank\">2021 Summit on demand<\/a>. The UDL Implementation and Research Network (UDL-\u00adIRN) is hosting the 8th Annual International Summit virtually April 12th-14th, 2021. Presenters from around the globe will be joining online to participate both synchronously and asynchronously to deliver content to colleagues in the UDL field.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"7th Annual CAST symposium: The Future Designed (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cast.org\/events\/2021\/07\/7th-annual-udl-symposium-future-designed\" target=\"_blank\">7th Annual CAST symposium: The Future Designed<\/a>. This event will take place on 28-30\/07\/21. This event promises to &#8220;highlight promising work taking place in the field and will also serve as a forum to think about how we can begin to intentionally design for a better future right now.&#8221;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, UDLHE Digicon was an inspirational conference with a wide range of applicable presentations from presenters in the USA, Canada, Norway and the Republic of Ireland. I&#8217;ve made contact with a number of presenters and delegates since the event to share ideas.
