{"id":4944,"date":"2020-03-26T12:59:12","date_gmt":"2020-03-26T12:59:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/?p=4944"},"modified":"2023-08-18T16:19:59","modified_gmt":"2023-08-18T15:19:59","slug":"virtual-lab-an-alternative-way-to-support-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/2020\/03\/26\/virtual-lab-an-alternative-way-to-support-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Virtual Lab: an alternative way to support students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With the recent announcement of the temporary closure of the\nUniversity due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Digital Learning team is now more\nfocussed than ever on how we can support the delivery of effective online\nlearning for both students and academics using the tools available on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having worked at the University for a period of time now, I\nhave witnessed the decline of interactive content in favour of videos for\nlearning. This may be due to the affordance video have over popular rapid eLearning\nauthoring tools in terms of time, ease of use, hosting and connection with the\naudience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rapid eLearning authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline do involve a learning curve but with perseverance, more complex learning resources can be achieved. This type of resource is great for guided tasks involving complex equipment, procedures or case studies. &nbsp;The license for the software is expensive, so rather than attempt your own creations using a 30 day free trial, we recommend that you work with our team to create something bespoke for your course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why create an Interactive Virtual Lab?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Interactive Virtual Lab has been in development for the past few months using Articulate Storyline. The request came from <a href=\"https:\/\/zepler.soton.ac.uk\/people\/gm1a11\">Prof. Goran Mashanovich<\/a>, who, together with Sarah Fielding (Digital Learning) were able to put forward a solution to address the issue outlined below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe practical uses\nequipment that is not normally available to undergraduates and as such represents\na unique learning experience. The student have a limited amount of time (3\nhours) to complete the practical and work in pairs.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Prior to 2020, the\npreparation activity for the practical consisted of students reading a lab primer\nstatic document. Articulate Storyline was surprisingly accommodating when it came to\nproducing what I wanted, albeit, a workaround for some scenarios. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest challenge being how to simulate the movement of the X, Y and Z dials and correlating them with the movement of the fibre tip display on the monitor screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"755\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2020\/03\/Fibre-Tip.png?resize=755%2C574\" alt=\"Fibre Tip\" class=\"wp-image-4952\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2020\/03\/Fibre-Tip.png?w=1020&amp;ssl=1 1020w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2020\/03\/Fibre-Tip.png?resize=300%2C228&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2020\/03\/Fibre-Tip.png?resize=768%2C584&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 755px) 100vw, 755px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Interactivity between dial controllers and fibre tip<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although students will not be able to access the labs for this academic year during the COVID-19 pandemic, we will make the online resource available to students and ask them to evaluate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the purpose of this blog was to showcase the Virtual\nLab, we were hoping that this would be a good way to encourage academic staff\nto consider how their course content might be transformed using Articulate\nStoryline and to make some amazing interactive online content to support students\nduring this difficult time of uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We at Digital Learning are always seeking innovative methods to deliver effective teaching online.
