We have, however, produced a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"sample video (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/user11540376\/review\/351604812\/853c28405a\" target=\"_blank\">sample video<\/a> to show the types of aerial footage that can be captured using it.  The Phantom 4 gives us the opportunity to get overhead footage such as that used in the promotional video for <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"the Jane Austen MOOC (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.futurelearn.com\/courses\/jane-austen\" target=\"_blank\">the Jane Austen MOOC<\/a> and Biological Sciences&#8217; Dale field trip, and has also come in useful aiding a roof inspection for Estates and Facilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With expectations of building more engaging eLearning resources, it is inevitable that the drone will be used much more in the future, to meet the demands to enhance learning within the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this in mind, Sofy, Paul and myself attended a\nPermission for Commercial Operations (PfCO) course in order to obtain permission\nto fly a drone for commercial purposes. This is a legal document required to\noperate a drone commercially in UK airspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 1<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>After some pre-course study, we attended a two day course held at Phoenix Helicopters, Lee on Solent. The first day was \u2018ground\u2019 school which was broken up into the following topics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Air Law and responsibilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meteorology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aircraft knowledge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Airspace<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigation and charts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Human factors and airmanship<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety and UAV operations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the day, we had to sit a multiple choice test\nconsisting of 40 questions in which a pass mark of 75% had to be obtained \u2013\nwith the threat of resit the next day should anyone fail. Luckily, we all\npassed (a special mention to Sofy, who managed to achieve 100%, which has never\nhappened before according to our instructor).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 2<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>With the test out of the way, day 2 was less tense and was focused\non putting the theory we learnt on day 1 into practice. Our instructor taught\nus how prepare for a commercial flight operation; flight planning, site\nassessment, risk assessment, authorisation from landowners and airports. We\nworked in pairs and were given 30 minutes to complete all the documents\nrequired for a past \u2018live\u2019 job: \u2018Flying a drone around Brighton Pier\u2019. Putting\nthe theory into practice made me realise how much preparation is needed to\ncomplete a simple operation such as this and the constraints to overcome such\nas weather conditions, airspace and land owners permission, the health and\nsafety to the general public and even birds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can go wrong?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The saying \u2018Ignorance is bliss\u2019 is certainly true. Prior to\nattending this course, I imagined that flying a drone was without many risks\nother than flying into a tree, building or pylon, and these risks could be overcome\nby finding an open area free of these obstacles.&nbsp; This is certainly not the case. This document will be submitted\nto the CAA for approval; once this is approved, we will be able to apply for a\nday to take the practical drone flying test where we have to perform several\nmanoeuvres in test conditions. Hopefully, this will go smoothly and we will all\npass\u2026.
