{"id":2396,"date":"2019-07-12T11:22:32","date_gmt":"2019-07-12T10:22:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/?p=2396"},"modified":"2023-08-16T17:08:34","modified_gmt":"2023-08-16T16:08:34","slug":"ecoffee-sgh-blackboard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/2019\/07\/12\/ecoffee-sgh-blackboard\/","title":{"rendered":"eCoffee @ SGH: Blackboard &#8211; what works well?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medicine has seen continuing success over the seven years of the university&#8217;s Blackboard &amp; VLE Awards, so in July&#8217;s eCoffee we explored some features of winning courses, sharing some ideas and inspiration ahead of the next academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blackboard upgrade<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blackboard has recently been upgraded, and as well as a cleaner, more modern interface includes a range of helpful tips and features.  More information can be found here:  <a href=\"http:\/\/go.soton.ac.uk\/bb2019\">http:\/\/go.soton.ac.uk\/bb2019<\/a>.  It is no longer compatible with Internet Explorer, but other browsers can be downloaded via Additional Software.  One issue we discussed was some modules now had a mix of the old and new default font in Blackboard &#8211; the <a aria-label=\"remove formatting (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Student\/Add_and_Format_Content\/Work_with_Text#can-i-paste-text-from-microsoft-word_OTP-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remove formatting<\/a> option in Blackboard can help resolve this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blackboard &amp; VLE Awards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The university&#8217;s annual Blackboard &amp; VLE Awards asks students to nominate up to three module sites that provide excellent support for their learning.  This gives valuable insight into what students find helpful in the virtual learning environment, and highlights examples of good practice, some of which can be explored further at: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"http:\/\/go.soton.ac.uk\/724 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/go.soton.ac.uk\/724\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/go.soton.ac.uk\/724<\/a>. First impressions can make a big difference to engaging learners, and although Blackboard modules default to landing on &#8216;Announcements&#8217;, if these are rarely used it&#8217;s possible to <a href=\"http:\/\/elearn.southampton.ac.uk\/blackboard\/entrypoint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"change the entry point. Dr Veronica Hollis talked about recent features introduced to the sites.<\/p>\n<p>To encourage students to engage with pre-learning materials, <a href=\"http:\/\/elearn.southampton.ac.uk\/blackboard\/testsandsurveys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"quizzes (opens in a new tab)\">quizzes<\/a> have been added to help learners check their knowledge.
