BETT 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1595\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2019\/03\/20190124_110246-1024x576.jpg?resize=584%2C329\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In January, Sarah Fielding and Chrissie Metcalf attended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bettshow.com\/bett-show-2019-highlights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BETT<\/a> \u2013 an education showcase event hosted by Microsoft.\u00a0Bringing together 850 leading companies and 103 exciting new edtech start-ups, BETT gives its 34,700 attendees from the global education community an opportunity to find inspiration and discuss the future of education<\/p>\n<p>Whilst the majority of edtech is focused on compulsory-aged education, it\u00a0enabled us to delve further into\u00a0what kind\u00a0of background the students may have come from, think about how we can take advantage of this within Higher Education and see the expectations and developing role of technology within the education sector.\u00a0BETT also features a Higher Education area and some inspiring high-level keynote speakers from companies such as Canvas.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1596\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2019\/03\/20190124_110640-1024x576.jpg?resize=700%2C394\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Interacting with start-up companies at an early stage is a great way to shape the development of those tools, making them more fit for purpose in HE environments. Notable companies and individuals that we spoke to on the day included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vrfocus.com\/author\/steve-bambury\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VR guru Steve Bambury<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pi-top.com\/products\/pi-top-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pi-top<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinglink.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thinglink<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/edu.google.com\/products\/vr-ar\/expeditions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Expeditions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We also watched informative presentations from other HEIs about their experiences of using Microsoft Teams for education (UCLAN) and Minecraft to teach biological sampling techniques (Teesside), providing valuable insight into how they are using technology to engage students and staff in dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>All-in-all\u00a0an exciting and productive day, with lots of inspiration brought back into the team.
