It&#8217;s hard to say whether there has been wider adoption across teaching &amp; learning at the University. Certainly, the conversation has been livelier and we&#8217;ve been able to provide advice to more people keen to explore this media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wanted to give you a quick summary and some of the projects we&#8217;ve been involved as a Digital Learning Team and <strong>five of the podcasts<\/strong> that personally have kept me company on my commute in and on walks to and from different campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The podcast that has been a constant almost weekly has been the <a href=\"http:\/\/tidepodcast.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TIDE &#8211; Today in Digital Education Podcast<\/a> presented by <a href=\"http:\/\/daibarnes.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dai Barnes <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/dougbelshaw.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Belshaw<\/a>. I&#8217;ve really enjoyed listening to the presenters catch up each week and talk about the work that they do, stories in the news that catch their eye and ideas they&#8217;re developing in their respective areas. There&#8217;s a good degree of challenge between the two of them, they&#8217;re passionate about the subject matter, not afraid to speak from personal experience and share a great sense of humour and ease that really engages the listener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"irc_mimg irc_hic\"><figure><a class=\"irc_mil i3597\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=i&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=images&amp;cd=&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjq3Mz21tXbAhWBsxQKHQdiAVMQjRx6BAgBEAU&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fdougbelshaw.com%2Fblog%2F2015%2F09%2F29%2Ftide-high%2F&amp;psig=AOvVaw2OV-wVTe6EnWmu5pKLFuMC&amp;ust=1529152447746778\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"irc_mi\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbelshaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/TIDE-promo.001.png?resize=755%2C378\" alt=\"Image result for tide podcast doug dai\" width=\"755\" height=\"378\"><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It was with this in mind that I started recording ad-hoc episodes of <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/dz\/podcast\/fbksoton\/id1114379820\">FBKSoton<\/a> and certainly enjoyed chatting with my colleagues about the opportunities for teaching &amp; learning at Southampton. It takes time and discipline that I don&#8217;t have to maintain a series, but it was a great start and certainly inspired me to use audio with students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There have been a number of projects that I&#8217;ve been involved in a Southampton and it&#8217;s great to meet academics who are interested in exploring alternative forms of assessment with their students. Although many in the <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/elip_uos\/sets\/biological-sciences-podcasting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Biological Sciences &#8211; Science Communication<\/a> cohort couldn&#8217;t call themselves regular listeners to podcasts, they were able to create their own shows and learned the techniques for writing and recording quickly. Those who wrote a script and read this out missed the opportunity somewhat to express their voices, but those who found friends (often a lay-person) to riff with or opportunities for informal conversation were more successful. Certainly, we unearthed some talented presenters, able to engage with the topic and share with their audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/v4m5xbCkEDc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2016 Podcast Conference<\/a> enabled us to create material to support academics and many enjoyed a day of talks from notable and eminent podcast presenters. These included the founder and host of <a href=\"https:\/\/theedtechpodcast.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Edtech Podcast<\/a> Sophie Bailey who spoke about the break she&#8217;d made into setting up her own company, becoming a presenter, researcher, journalist, and advocate for the Edtech sector. This series of fascinating shows brings the best people together to discuss innovation and ideas in education and technology. Sophie creates a strong rapport with guests, helping them to talk through often complex subjects in an open and accessible way. There&#8217;s always a balance too between the need to establish and promote an edtech startup and the educators&#8217; desire to understand how this technology would benefit learners.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-1166 size-large\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"414\" width=\"755\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2018\/06\/audiencesotonpod-1024x561.png?resize=755%2C414\" alt=\"The audience at sotonpod\" class=\"wp-image-1166\" \/><figcaption>The lovely people who attended #sotonpod16<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Our desire at Southampton was to encourage and support a community of podcasters and it&#8217;s interesting to see how many home-grown or resident podcasters there are. From the newly produced <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/publicpolicysouthampton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Policy Podcasts<\/a> to more established gems such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/the-science-shed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Science Shed <\/a>presented by Dr Nick Evan&#8217;s and Dr Steven Lee. These podcasts talk about the research that&#8217;s ongoing at Southampton and ways to promote and talk through issues and ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-1167 size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"412\" width=\"755\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2018\/06\/science-shed-1024x559.jpg?resize=755%2C412\" alt=\"science-shed\" class=\"wp-image-1167\" \/><figcaption>The Science Shed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Policy is a vital area in HE, where many of us who work in the sector are affected directly by the decisions made by regulatory boards, government bodies, public sector agencies and other interested parties. <a href=\"https:\/\/wonkhe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WonkHE<\/a> produces a <a href=\"https:\/\/wonkhe.com\/blog-themes\/podcasts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">weekly podcast<\/a> which perfectly captures passionate debate around the sector, with the highlight <a href=\"https:\/\/wonkhe.com\/blogs\/the-university-show-season-1-episode-5-the-enemy-within\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Episode 5 &#8211; The Enemy Within<\/a> presented by WonkHE editor Mark Leach, a call to arms, designed to stir debate, putting forward a plea for sense and understanding around the future of the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best podcasts are <a href=\"https:\/\/99percentinvisible.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">intimate<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b01n7094\/episodes\/downloads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">human<\/a>, voices <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p02pc9zz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">touch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/howwegettonext.com\/wonderland-podcast-dc6e08ab07f6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interrupt<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knowideaspodcast.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">engage<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/adam-buxton.co.uk\/podcasts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">humour<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/themoth.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lightness<\/a>. They act as a record of a <a href=\"https:\/\/audioboom.com\/channel\/Documentally\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">moment<\/a>, they capture <a href=\"http:\/\/podcast.contrafabulists.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sense-making<\/a> amidst the sometimes confusing world around us. I hope that Southampton continues to showcase new voices and that audio continues to be valued by those who consume and create it.
