Share real, individual stories as well as big news items.<\/li>\n<li>Start a conversation and keep it going: Social media is about connecting, not shouting. Aim to generate discussion rather than likes.<\/li>\n<li>Be respectful: Show sensitivity to social and cultural backgrounds.<\/li>\n<li>One size doesn\u2019t fit all: Optimise content for the particular platform, rather than copying from one platform to another.<\/li>\n<li>Good data leads to good decisions: Measure analytics to see what works (but not necessarily \u2018vanity metrics\u2019).<\/li>\n<li>Use it or lose it: Rather than setting up an account you will only use occasionally, work with colleagues to combine content from a shared channel.<\/li>\n<li>Always have a failsafe: At least two people should have editing rights to each channel.<\/li>\n<li>Personal data is sacred: Make sure you adhere to the requirements of the GDPR. Images are a valuable way of enhancing social media, but be mindful that these are personal data too, and should be stored&nbsp;with appropriate information and permission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The full handbook can be downloaded&nbsp;here:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2018\/06\/University-of-Southampton-Social-Media-Handbook-2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Media handbook<\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; and is accompanied by a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/ow.ly\/H1mv30ksxIh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Slack community<\/a>&nbsp;providing online support for account owners.<\/p>\n<p>Some good examples of social media channels include the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UniSotonLibrary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Library&#8217;s Twitter account<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/UniversityofSouthamptonResidences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Residences Facebook page<\/a>, both of which are informative with a conversational tone;&nbsp;another example is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/blog\/life-at-southampton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Life at Southampton blog<\/a>&nbsp;which features student contributors.&nbsp; Lists of various UoS Twitter accounts&nbsp;have been collated at:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/unisouthampton\/lists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/unisouthampton\/lists<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We also heard about the OneWeb project, working to re-design course pages to better&nbsp;support users.&nbsp; Information about how to get involved&nbsp;can be found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/blog\/digitalteam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Team blog<\/a>&nbsp;at:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/blog\/digitalteam\/2018\/04\/13\/were-building-better-course-pages-heres-how-you-can-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We\u2019re building better course pages, here\u2019s how you can help<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Do join us for next month&#8217;s eCoffee on July 24th, 10-11am in LF9.&nbsp; We will hear how tutors in the new Personal &amp; Professional Development module engaged and supported students online, using various tools including Sway, podcasts and Peerwise.&nbsp; All welcome!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In June\u2019s eCoffee, Jonny Vaughan, Ayala Gordon and Hayleigh Sidhu from the university\u2019s Communications and Marketing team visited to share the work they\u2019ve been doing shaping the university\u2019s social media presence.
