After much deliberation, a shortlist has been chosen and can be viewed <a href=\"http:\/\/go.soton.ac.uk\/724\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Among the comments are a number of insights into the impact good VLE provision can make on a student&#8217;s&nbsp;experience:<br \/>\n<div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\u201cThe use of blackboard for this course was a vital part in my success and improved learning\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[My lecturer] deserves recognition for his blackboard skills; it is a factor in deciding to take his modules\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe layout on blackboard and all of the resources helped me to achieve a strong first in this module\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf every module were taught in this way making full use of technology available, I would study my Masters at the University\u201d<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Common themes and features mentioned in&nbsp;the comments are summarised below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>VLE as place<\/strong><br \/>\nA good learning environment will have certain characteristics whether it is physical or virtual. Students highlight the value of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A helpful layout that is easy to navigate<\/li>\n<li>Clear signposting of resources<\/li>\n<li>Being able to choose how to study, with a range of materials and formats offered<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>VLE as person<\/strong><br \/>\nAt last year&#8217;s Awards one module lead talked about the importance of seeing the VLE not as \u201ctechnical, but as an extension of you and the classroom\u201d. &nbsp;It&#8217;s evident that students appreciate a VLE where there is a strong staff presence and sense of community, nominating sites where:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They are guided through&nbsp;the course, with direction&nbsp;to key activities&nbsp;and context for resources<\/li>\n<li>There are opportunities for interaction, such as &nbsp;&#8216;Ask the lecturer&#8217; discussion forums or group blogs<\/li>\n<li>Staff provide regular updates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>VLE as preparation<\/strong><br \/>\nComments this year particularly emphasise the importance of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Advance availability of content and information<\/li>\n<li>Clear&nbsp;assessment details, accompanied by&nbsp;revision exercises, past papers and feedback<\/li>\n<li>Specific pre-lecture&nbsp;tasks or activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>VLE as playground<\/strong><br \/>\nMany students nominate course sites that stand out due to the engaging way content is presented and delivered, where quizzes and other interactive learning activities &#8220;do not feel like work&#8221; and links to optional extras encourage further exploration.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3579\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2017\/07\/VLE_Awards_2016_trophies.jpg?resize=300%2C200\" alt=\"VLE_Awards_2016_trophies\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"><\/p>\n<p>It has also been great to view courses submitted&nbsp;by staff&nbsp;in the&nbsp;self-nominated category, which offer many exciting features. Some inspiring examples from these courses&nbsp;will be shared shortly.<\/p>\n<p>The winning courses in both categories will be announced at the Awards Lunch on May 11th.
