In the past, badges have been physical objects made of metal or cloth and worn on clothing and issued by an awarding body. Today, digital badges have developed into icons supported by metadata that mimics the visual representation of a badge and the reliability of the awarding body. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is badge metadata? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Metadata binds a badge icon to supplementary information. The <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7XLz-JYc-wo\">Open Badge Standard <\/a>specifies what supplementary information is required.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Badge recipient <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Badge issuer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Criteria for earning the badge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evidence of achievement <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Issue date<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, metadata provides credibility to the badge. It facilitates its verification and understanding and operability across digital badging services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Gold medals are not made of gold. Working with stakeholders Digital Learning is developing a range of use cases across the university to determine the viability for our organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this being an exploration the selected platforms <em>may <\/em>change, or the university may decide that digital badges are not viable, in this instance, Digital Learning would work with each of our use cases to develop an exit strategy to sustain and support work that has taken place with digital badges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pre-pilot use cases<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Foundation Engineering programme<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/digital-learning\/2022\/05\/06\/blackboard-and-vle-awards-10th-anniversary\/\">Blackboard and VLE awards<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Southampton Sustainability Solutions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doctoral College <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What if I want to use digital badges?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can!
