The Event
This event is part of the outreach and widening participation work delivered to local schools by the School of Modern Languages and Cultures through the Routes into Languages network. This new event is for students in Year 11 and will be a forum to explore the academic skills, personal enrichment and careers opportunities that the study of languages can provide. Students will be able to develop the following:
- language skills
- societal and cultural awareness
- careers and employability skills
Students will access three different sessions throughout the day, a taster session in a new language (Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese TBC) a society and culture session and a careers and employability session. The sessions will be delivered by our SMLC academics, Warwick alumni and finalists returning from their year abroad. The day will be supported by our wonderful team of SMLC student ambassadors!
Who is it for?
Local Coventry and Warwickshire schools and those who are part of our Routes into Languages WM network can apply to attend. We would recommend schools bring pupils in Year 11 who are able linguists and may be considering choosing a language at A’ level. We hope the event will broaden their views on studying languages, increase motivation, provide excellent insight into study at HE level and provide on-campus university experience. It would also be an ideal enrichment opportunity for students on pupil premium registers. If oversubscribed we will prioritise schools who meet our widening participation criteria (higher than average % of pupils on free school meals and/or school postcode in lower polar quintile area), otherwise allocation of places will be on a first come first served basis.
Logistics
The event will take place on Wednesday 6 November 2024 10-3.30pm on central campus at The University of Warwick. We have space for 8 schools to attend, with each bringing 10 Year 11 pupils. Sessions will be allocated randomly upon registration.
Cost
There is no cost attached to the event, but schools must arrange their own transport to campus and pupils must bring a packed lunch. Lunch for staff will be provided. Further details will be communicated once places have been allocated.
How do I sign up?
Please view our webpage Year 11 Languages Discovery Day (warwick.ac.uk) complete the details on the sign-up form by 10 October uploading a letter from a member of your school’s senior leadership team which confirms that you have permission to bring pupils to the event. Please note that signing up does not guarantee a place but please only do so if you are committed to attending as we are expecting lots of interest!
