Welcome to the Routes into Languages website

Who we are

Routes into Languages is a network of universities in England working with partners to provide resources and activities for school pupils and teachers and promote the take-up of languages across the United Kingdom. Formerly a funded project (2006-2016), it is now hosted by the University Council For Languages (UCFL). Each English region organises a range of events such as languages competitions, careers in languages workshops, CPD sessions and school visits from student language ambassadors offering taster sessions, language support and mentoring. Routes into Languages Cymru run similar events across Wales. Our partners include NICILT in Northern Ireland, SCILT in Scotland, the National Network for Interpreting and Translation, Learning through Languages UK, and Queen’s College Translation Exchange. See the Partners tab for more details.

What we do

Recent events have included the annual National Spelling Bee, Summer Holiday Language Immersion Challenge, and the Language Leader Award. We also support schools in participating in other national events such as Mother Tongue Other Tongue and European Day of Languages. Choose your region on the Routes regions and events tab to find out more about activities happening in your area.
