The University of Ghana was founded as the University College of the Gold Coast by Ordinance on August 11, 1948 for the purpose of providing and promoting university education, learning and research. It currently has a mission to develop world-class human resource and capabilities to meet national development needs and global challenges through quality teaching, learning, research and knowledge dissemination. The University has an enrolment of over 20,000 degree candidates, including undergraduate, graduate, and international students. Comprising of three campuses, the University of Ghana offers academic learning and research through it’s four colleges. In addition, UG encompasses a number of research institutes and centres, libraries, administrative offices and other support services. Located in the University of Ghana and currently under the College of Humanities, the Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS) was\u00a0established in 1972 jointly by the United Nations in partnership with the Government of Ghana. Since its establishment, the Institute has served as a regional centre for teaching and research training at the post-graduate level of population scientists in English-speaking countries in Africa. Currently, the institute has an internationally recognised doctoral training programme of the highest repute, and the programme has at its core an extramurally-funded research mission that supports the various aspects of RIPS\u2019 work which includes research in demography, population dynamics and climate change.<\/p>\n
